A significant earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck southern Japan on Tuesday, resulting in at least 34 fatalities and widespread disruption to essential infrastructure. The quake has raised concerns regarding the resilience of the nation’s manufacturing supply chains, particularly in the automotive and semiconductor sectors, which are critical to Japan’s economy.

Impact on Manufacturing and Supply Chains

The earthquake, which occurred in the Kumamoto region, has severely affected local manufacturing operations. This area is crucial for Japan’s automotive industry and is often referred to as the country’s “Silicon Valley” due to its concentration of semiconductor firms. Roads were ruptured, and utilities were cut off for thousands of households, leading to significant operational challenges for manufacturers.

Toyota has announced the suspension of production at three plants in Fukuoka, located north of Kumamoto, until August 5. Additionally, one of its facilities in Aichi, over 600 kilometers from the epicenter, will also halt operations next week. A spokesperson for Toyota indicated that these decisions were made with safety and the status of distribution companies and suppliers in mind.

Aisin, a key supplier for Toyota, Daihatsu, and Nissan, has also been impacted. The company stated it is preparing to resume production “sequentially on lines where safety and quality can be confirmed,” although a timeline for full operations remains undetermined.

Broader Industry Implications

The recent earthquake has reignited concerns about the vulnerability of Japan’s supply chains, particularly in light of the devastating quake in 2016 that severely disrupted production. While economists do not anticipate disruptions on the same scale as those experienced in 2016, ongoing issues related to parts shortages could have far-reaching consequences for automakers.

Denso, the world’s second-largest auto parts manufacturer, reported that one of its suppliers in the affected area has been impacted, with 13 others currently assessing the situation. The ripple effects of the quake are likely to be felt across various tiers of suppliers, including second- and third-tier manufacturers that provide components to major Tier 1 suppliers.

Nissan has also announced the suspension of some production at its two vehicle plants in Kyushu due to delays in parts deliveries. Mitsubishi Motors is halting production at a facility in Okayama, western Japan, as a precautionary measure.

Semiconductor Manufacturing Challenges

Kumamoto has emerged as a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, producing essential components for a wide range of products, from smartphones to industrial machinery. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, evacuated personnel from its Kumamoto plant immediately following the quake but has since begun to resume operations.

In contrast, Renesas, another major chipmaker, has indicated that it will only be able to restart operations at one of its Kumamoto plants in phases beginning August 5, following structural damage that included fallen ceiling panels and water leaks. Tokyo Electron, a key producer of chip-making equipment, plans to restart production at its facility next week, while Sony is also working to resume operations at its semiconductor plant in the region.

Casualties and Structural Damage

The earthquake’s death toll, while significantly lower than the more than 260 fatalities recorded in the 2016 disaster, has nonetheless raised alarms. Nearly half of the reported deaths occurred in commercial facilities. Notably, nine individuals lost their lives at Nippon Paper Industries’ paper mill near the epicenter, which sustained major structural damage, including a toppled smokestack. Additionally, seven fatalities were reported at Aeon’s shopping mall, the largest in the prefecture, where a possible gas explosion occurred over an hour after the initial quake.

As Japan continues to grapple with the aftermath of this disaster, the resilience of its manufacturing supply chains will be put to the test. The ongoing assessment of damage and the response from manufacturers will be closely monitored in the coming weeks.
