CAN’S Gallery: A Beacon of Artistic Expression in Jakarta

The Beginning of a Journey

In 2000, a vision took shape in the bustling city of Jakarta. Inge Santoso and Tommy Sutomo, driven by their passion for art rather than profit, founded CAN’S Gallery, originally known as Canna Gallery. Inge recalls, “We wanted to share the rich expression and fascinating imaginations of talented artists whose works we have collected over the years.” This ethos has been the backbone of the gallery’s mission ever since.

A Challenging Start

Their initial location in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, a predominantly commercial area with scarce cultural outlets, posed unique challenges. The couple faced skepticism not just from the market but also from the artistic community, which was still finding its footing in an evolving Indonesia. Despite these obstacles, CAN’S Gallery persevered, determined to provide a platform for local talent.

Growth and Evolution

The turning point came when the founders decided to rename the gallery to CAN’S Gallery and relocate to the historic Borobudur Auction building in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta. This move was strategic; the larger venue facilitated a more dynamic interaction with visitors and allowed for an extensive array of exhibitions. The gallery became a vibrant hub for diverse artistic expressions, showcasing not only established artists but also emerging talents.

Showcasing Indonesian Talent Globally

From its new home, CAN’S Gallery rapidly expanded its horizons. The gallery took Indonesian artists to the international arena, participating in prestigious art fairs like Art Paris, Art Dubai, Art Miami, and Art Basel Hong Kong. Each event not only highlighted the unique perspectives of Indonesian artists but also positioned the gallery as a vital player in the global art scene.

Embracing Emerging Artists

Beyond showcasing established names, CAN’S Gallery has a deep commitment to nurturing emerging artists. Through curated exhibitions and collaborative projects, the gallery creates opportunities for fresh voices, allowing them to experiment and gain exposure. This inclusive ethos enriches Jakarta’s artistic landscape and fosters a sense of community.

The Ripple Effect on Indonesian Art

Over the years, CAN’S Gallery has not just promoted artists but has also contributed to the broader redefinition of Indonesian art. Through innovative exhibitions and keen audience engagement, the gallery fosters a mindset that appreciates art as a vital part of culture and society. Here, art is not merely an aesthetic endeavor but a dialogue about identity, history, and contemporary issues.

The Personal Touch

What sets CAN’S Gallery apart is the personal touch that Inge and Tommy bring to their work. Their genuine passion for art spills over into every aspect of the gallery, creating an environment that feels welcoming and engaging. Training their keen eyes on detail, they curate each exhibition thoughtfully, allowing the stories behind the artworks to resonate with visitors.

A Legacy of Creativity

As CAN’S Gallery continues to evolve, its founders remain steadfast in their belief that art is for everyone. Their journey reflects a dedication not just to showcasing art but to creating a vibrant cultural discourse that can inspire future generations. This gallery is more than just a space for exhibiting art; it is a sanctuary where creativity thrives and stories unfold.

In an ever-changing world, CAN’S Gallery stands firm as a pillar of artistic heritage, inviting audiences to explore the depths of Indonesian creativity, one exhibition at a time.
