Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has shattered a long-standing barrier by signing with Sydney Thunder, marking a historic moment in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). This groundbreaking move represents the first time a male player who has represented India internationally will compete in the BBL, breaking new ground for Indian cricketers in overseas franchise leagues.
Ashwin’s deal with Sydney Thunder comes on the heels of his retirement from international cricket in December and the conclusion of his Indian Premier League (IPL) career just last month. These career milestones have freed him from the restrictions imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has traditionally barred male players from participating in global franchise T20 leagues outside India. While Indian women have previously taken part in the women’s edition of the BBL, no male player had ventured into this league until now.
The Sydney Thunder themselves celebrated the announcement, describing Ashwin as the biggest overseas signing since the BBL’s inception. Their statement highlighted Ashwin’s upcoming role, noting that he is expected to join Thunder’s lineup in early January and play a key role as the club aims for back-to-back appearances in the BBL Finals. The excitement within the Thunder camp reflects the high expectations placed on Ashwin’s impactful performances.
Although Ashwin will eventually bolster the Thunder’s campaign, he will not be available immediately when the BBL season kicks off in December. This delay is due to his prior commitment to the International League T20 tournament, set to take place in the United Arab Emirates from December 2 to January 4. Ashwin participated in the auction for that tournament, ensuring his presence in the UAE before joining his Australian franchise team.
Discussing his new role with Sydney Thunder, Ashwin emphasized the clarity and trust he found in his conversations with the club’s leadership. He praised Thunder captain Dave Warner’s playing style and emphasized the importance of aligning mindsets between players and team leaders. Ashwin expressed eagerness to perform for the Thunder Nation, highlighting the mutual enthusiasm and collaborative spirit between himself and the team.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ashwin has accumulated impressive statistics, retiring from Test cricket with a remarkable 765 international wickets across all formats. His tally includes 537 wickets in Test cricket alone. In the IPL, Ashwin ranked as the fifth-highest wicket-taker, capturing 187 wickets over 221 matches. These achievements underscore his proven skill and experience, which are set to add significant value to the Sydney Thunder lineup in the upcoming BBL seasons.
