Abu Dhabi to Enforce New Heavy-Vehicle Restrictions in 2025
Starting December 1, 2025, Abu Dhabi will implement new restrictions on heavy vehicles along several major roads. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving road safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing traffic flow throughout the emirate.
Key Roads Affected by the Restrictions
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), under the auspices of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has identified specific routes for these restrictions. Heavy-vehicle traffic will be prohibited on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road (E11) and Al Raha Beach Road (E10). Additionally, there will be time-specific limitations on Al Rawdah Road (E30) in the Musaffah area during peak hours.
Objective of the Heavy-Vehicle Ban
These measures form part of ITC’s broader plan to manage traffic in areas that frequently see a high volume of truck activity. By implementing these restrictions, the aim is to minimize accidents, enhance mobility, and bolster the efficiency of Abu Dhabi’s transport network, which is vital for residential, commercial, and industrial sectors across the region.
The ban on heavy vehicles on E11 and E10 is specifically designed to alleviate traffic congestion on two of the emirate’s busiest routes, particularly during times when private vehicles and public buses are most active.
Enhancing Road Safety and Alternative Routes
According to the ITC, the new rules are intended to create a better travel experience for all road users, supporting a safer and more dependable transport environment. As part of the implementation process, alternative routes will be designated for heavy vehicles, including Al Fayah – Seih Shuaib Road (E75) and Al Haffar Road. These corridors have been prepared to accommodate truck traffic safely, ensuring the uninterrupted movement of goods while maintaining city traffic flow.
Furthermore, trucks will be prohibited on Al Rawdah Road (E30) within the Musaffah Industrial Area during morning and evening rush hours. To further reduce interaction between heavy vehicles and lighter traffic, an alternative route via the ICAD Bridge will be made available.
Commitment to Road Efficiency and Safety
Abdulla Hamad AlEryani, the Acting Executive Director of the Planning and Strategic Affairs Sector at ITC, noted that these new regulations demonstrate a commitment to improving the efficiency of Abu Dhabi’s road network while prioritizing traffic safety. He emphasized that these measures align with the goals of Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, which envisions a modernized and sustainable transport system that supports the long-term economic aspirations of the emirate.
Fostering a Better Transport Environment
AlEryani elaborated, stating, “The Integrated Transport Centre continuously implements targeted initiatives designed to enhance traffic flow while providing a safe and environmentally friendly transport environment.” He highlighted that restricting heavy vehicles on key roads is part of a well-structured strategy that aims to balance safety concerns with the operational needs of commercial transport services.
In light of these upcoming changes, ITC has urged all heavy-vehicle operators and transport companies to adhere to the new regulations and the signage that will be placed along the affected routes. The ITC emphasized the importance of cooperation among all road users to ensure a smooth transition and to enhance overall road safety and quality of life in the region.
