UK government considers banning Vinted and eBay for users under 16 to enhance child safety

Published:

The UK government is considering extending its upcoming social media ban for users under 16 to include online marketplaces such as Vinted and eBay, according to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. This potential move aims to enhance child safety by restricting access to platforms where messaging features could expose minors to risks, including grooming by strangers.

The ban, set to take effect in March 2024, will initially target popular social media sites like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Nandy indicated that the government is “looking seriously” at including Vinted and eBay in this list, reflecting growing concerns about the safety of children online.

In response to the government’s considerations, eBay expressed its commitment to collaborating with the government to ensure a safe marketplace experience. A spokesperson stated, “While the details of the proposed legislation are not yet clear, we look forward to understanding more and continuing to work constructively with the government.” Vinted also welcomed the opportunity for dialogue, emphasizing its commitment to user safety.

The potential inclusion of these platforms follows reports that the social media ban could be expanded to encompass other resale sites like Depop and Facebook Marketplace. Concerns have been raised regarding the messaging capabilities of these platforms, which may facilitate inappropriate interactions between adults and minors.

eBay has long been a significant player in the online resale market, requiring users to be over 18 due to the contractual nature of transactions. Meanwhile, Vinted, which has rapidly gained popularity with 17 million users in the UK, allows parents to create accounts for their children, provided they supervise their usage.

A spokesperson for Vinted noted that while direct messaging is integral to the platform, it maintains a “zero tolerance for harmful or explicit content,” supported by moderation teams to enforce community guidelines. The spokesperson added, “When we identify inappropriate behaviour, we take action, up to a permanent ban or reporting to the relevant authorities.”

The proposed changes reflect a broader trend in the UK towards tightening regulations on online platforms to protect younger users. As the government prepares to finalize the details of the ban, the implications for businesses operating in the online marketplace sector could be significant, potentially reshaping how these platforms engage with younger audiences.
