At the World Travel Market (WTM) London 2026 ministerial summit, the UAE’s Ministry of Economy and Tourism unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the country’s tourism competitiveness. This initiative, articulated by H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, emphasizes resilience, innovation, and diversification as key pillars for sustainable growth in the tourism sector.

The summit, which brought together tourism ministers and industry leaders from around the globe, focused on developing inclusive tourism investment models, enhancing destination attractiveness, and leveraging digital transformation. Bin Touq highlighted the UAE’s commitment to creating a robust tourism infrastructure and flexible policies that adapt to global shifts while fostering long-term growth.

Vision for Sustainable Tourism Development

During his address, Bin Touq stated that the UAE’s forward-looking vision for tourism is designed to navigate both regional and global challenges. He noted, “To advance this vision, the UAE has developed state-of-the-art tourism infrastructure, introduced flexible legislation and policies, and expanded its air connectivity network.” This multifaceted approach aims to embed sustainable practices across all tourism activities, ensuring that the sector remains competitive and resilient.

Furthermore, the UAE’s participation in the summit serves as a platform for engaging with global tourism leaders to explore future developments and strengthen public-private partnerships. Bin Touq emphasized the importance of innovation and technology in enhancing human capabilities within the tourism sector, aligning with the broader goals of the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031.

Diversifying Markets for Enhanced Competitiveness

Bin Touq also pointed out that enhancing the competitiveness of the tourism sector requires diversifying markets and expanding air routes served by national airlines. This strategy aims to provide travelers with more options and mitigate the impact of challenges affecting specific markets. The UAE is actively pursuing expansion into new European markets to bolster its tourism appeal.

In addition to strengthening its presence in strategic tourism markets, the UAE is committed to enhancing air connectivity, which is vital for tourism and economic activity. Bin Touq reiterated that the country is focused on building international partnerships and developing protocols to address exceptional circumstances, ensuring the sector remains prepared for future challenges.

Strengthening International Cooperation

The UAE’s commitment to international cooperation was further underscored by its hosting of the 127th Session of the UN Tourism Executive Council. Bin Touq highlighted the significance of this event in facilitating the exchange of expertise and best practices in tourism development. He noted that collaboration with UN Tourism focuses on advancing sustainability, enhancing tourism education, and developing human capabilities.

On the sidelines of the summit, Bin Touq engaged in bilateral meetings with tourism ministers from India, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Portugal. These discussions aimed to explore opportunities for cooperation in various tourism sectors, including medical, cultural, and sustainable tourism, thereby unlocking broader prospects for mutual tourism flows and investments.

As the UAE continues to innovate and adapt its tourism strategies, it positions itself as a leading global destination, committed to sustainable development and enhanced competitiveness in the tourism sector. For more insights on the UAE’s tourism initiatives, refer to Economy Middle East.
