Abu Dhabi has made headlines in the automotive world as BYD’s YANGWANG U9 Xtreme electric hypercar set a new global speed record of 503.17 kilometers per hour on November 1, 2026. The record-breaking run took place on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Road (E11) in the Al Dhafra Region, showcasing the emirate’s robust infrastructure and support for high-speed automotive initiatives.

The attempt was executed by professional racing driver Marc Basseng on a specially secured section of the highway, highlighting the meticulous planning and coordination required to facilitate such a high-speed event. This achievement not only marks a significant milestone for BYD but also underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as a hub for automotive innovation.

Coordinated Government Support Enables BYD Milestone

The successful record attempt was made possible through the collaboration of several Abu Dhabi government entities, including the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), and the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility). These organizations worked together to ensure the necessary conditions were in place for the high-speed run.

“BYD chose Abu Dhabi to make automotive history, and we are proud to have played a part in making it possible,” stated Mohamed Ali Al Kamali, Chief of Trade and Industry at ADIO. He emphasized that this achievement reflects the emirate’s ambition to connect global industry leaders with its strategic location and long-term investment potential.

Al Kamali further noted, “From ROX Motor and Freelander to BYD, we are seeing a new chapter in Abu Dhabi’s engagement with leading Chinese automotive companies. These relationships go beyond individual milestones and create opportunities for growth.”

Abu Dhabi Strengthens Its Position in the Global Automotive Industry

This record-setting event adds to Abu Dhabi’s increasing engagement with international automotive manufacturers, particularly those from China. The emirate’s ability to host such ambitious initiatives is a testament to its advanced transport infrastructure and operational readiness.

His Excellency Eng Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Executive Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Sector at the Integrated Transport Centre, remarked, “Enabling a world-record speed run required precise technical planning, effective traffic management, and close coordination with relevant authorities.” He highlighted that the successful operation demonstrated Abu Dhabi’s capabilities in supporting specialized international initiatives while maintaining high safety standards.

Abu Dhabi’s strategic location, strong global connectivity, and established logistics infrastructure make it an attractive destination for automotive companies looking to expand their presence in regional and international markets. This record-breaking achievement not only enhances the emirate’s profile in the global automotive industry but also sets the stage for future collaborations and innovations.
