Shares in SpaceX drop over 9% amid broader tech stock decline following midterms

Published:

Shares in Elon Musk’s SpaceX fell over 9% on Thursday, reflecting a broader decline in technology and artificial intelligence stocks following the recent U.S. midterm elections. The Nasdaq Composite index, heavily weighted towards tech companies, dropped more than 5% during early trading, driven by concerns over increased scrutiny of data center construction and the AI sector after Democratic victories in key states like Texas.

Market analysts suggest that the election results have heightened fears regarding the future of data centers, which are critical for AI infrastructure. Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa has pledged to impose a moratorium on new data center construction, a move that has alarmed investors. This political shift has prompted tech leaders to reassess their communication strategies regarding the benefits of AI and data centers.

Impact on Major Tech Stocks

In addition to SpaceX, shares of other major tech companies also suffered significant losses. Tesla, another Musk-led venture, saw its stock drop by more than 11%. Chipmakers were particularly hard hit, with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) falling over 14% and Micron Technology experiencing a decline of up to 17% before a slight recovery. Intel and Nvidia shares also dropped by more than 7% and nearly 9%, respectively, contributing to a 10% fall in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.

The S&P 500 index mirrored this trend, declining by 3.8% by lunchtime. Susannah Streeter, chief investment strategist at Wealth Club, noted that the steep sell-off was sending shockwaves through other markets, indicating a broader panic over the AI sector. “Fears that the vast sums poured into AI infrastructure may not deliver the returns investors have been banking on are now colliding with the prospect of a sharp slowdown in data center construction,” she stated.

Reactions from Tech Leaders

In light of the backlash against data centers, some tech executives expressed surprise at the election outcomes and the subsequent market reactions. Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, emphasized the need for better community engagement, stating, “You can’t just tweet and say: ‘This is going to be good.’ You need to be in those communities.” Similarly, Meta’s president, Dina Powell McCormick, highlighted the importance of improving communication about AI’s benefits.

As the tech industry grapples with these challenges, investors are increasingly concerned that AI stocks may be overvalued and due for a correction. The immediate impacts of the midterm elections have raised questions about the sustainability of growth in the AI sector, prompting a reevaluation of investment strategies.

According to BBC News, the unfolding situation underscores the need for tech companies to adapt to changing political landscapes and public sentiment regarding their operations.
