Saudi coalition intercepts ballistic missile aimed at Medina amid Yanbu warning

Published:

The Saudi-led coalition announced on Thursday that it successfully intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi militia aimed at the Medina region, a site of significant religious importance. This interception occurred shortly after the kingdom’s civil defense agency issued a warning regarding potential threats near the strategic port of Yanbu, although it remains unclear if the two incidents are connected.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki confirmed the missile was destroyed before it could reach its target, stating, “Air defense intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the Medina region.” The Houthis have previously claimed they would refrain from targeting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, despite their ongoing military campaign against Saudi Arabia, which has included attacks on airports and energy infrastructure.

In recent months, the Houthis have intensified their focus on the port of Yanbu, which is crucial for Saudi oil exports. The National Early Warning Platform issued a statement alerting residents of Yanbu Governorate to a potential danger, underscoring the heightened security concerns in the area. Yanbu serves as the terminus for the East-West Pipeline, allowing Saudi oil to bypass the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, making it vital for the kingdom’s energy exports.

The interception of the missile and the warning issued for Yanbu highlight the ongoing tensions in the region, as the conflict between the Saudi coalition and the Houthis continues to evolve. The coalition’s ability to intercept such threats is critical for maintaining security in one of Islam’s holiest regions and protecting vital infrastructure.
