AT&T and AST SpaceMobile achieve significant milestone in direct-to-device services

Published:

AT&T and AST SpaceMobile have reported a significant advancement in direct-to-device (D2D) services, successfully executing a call handoff from a terrestrial network to a satellite network. This milestone, which involved equipment from Ericsson and Nokia, marks a notable step toward integrating satellite connectivity into mobile networks.

The companies are divided on whether this handoff is a first in the industry. AT&T claims it is, while AST SpaceMobile has opted for a more cautious stance, suggesting it may be the first without fully committing to the assertion. Regardless, the achievement underscores the potential for seamless communication between terrestrial and satellite networks, as highlighted by AT&T’s Senior Vice President of Network, Robert Walters.

Walters emphasized that while the handoff is a significant milestone, it is not the final goal. The next phase will involve beta testing under real-world conditions, which will allow both companies to refine their performance further. AST SpaceMobile’s Chief Commercial Officer, Wayne Thorsen, noted that the aim is to make space-based connectivity an integral part of the mobile network, enhancing user experience.

The significance of this handoff lies in the network adjustments that facilitated a smooth transition between terrestrial and satellite infrastructures, effectively minimizing the risk of dropped calls or interruptions. AT&T’s investment in AST SpaceMobile reflects its commitment to advancing the D2D sector, alongside other major operators collaborating with the satellite company.

As the telecommunications landscape evolves, the integration of satellite technology into mobile networks could redefine connectivity, particularly in areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking. The ongoing collaboration between AT&T and AST SpaceMobile will be closely watched as they move toward broader implementation of these services.

According to Mobile World Live, the successful handoff represents a pivotal moment in the quest for enhanced mobile connectivity.
