Mahela Jayawardene steps down as head coach of Mumbai Indians after disappointing season

Published:

Mahela Jayawardene has officially stepped down as head coach of the Mumbai Indians, as confirmed by the Indian Premier League (IPL) team on Saturday. This decision follows a disappointing season where the team finished second-bottom in the league, marking a stark contrast to Jayawardene’s earlier success with the franchise.

Jayawardene, who previously led the Mumbai Indians from 2017 to 2022, secured three IPL titles during his first tenure. However, after rejoining the team in 2024, he struggled to replicate that success. The Mumbai Indians finished fourth in 2025 and were eliminated in the playoffs, ultimately ending the 2026 season in a disappointing position.

In a statement reflecting on his time with the team, Jayawardene expressed pride in the achievements made during his tenure. “Together, we have shared some unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something we can all be proud of,” he stated. He also conveyed his best wishes for the team’s future endeavors, emphasizing the special connection he feels with the franchise.

The Mumbai Indians will now look to appoint a new head coach as they aim to rebound from a challenging season and restore their status as one of the IPL’s premier teams. The franchise’s management will likely prioritize finding a candidate who can harness the potential of their talented roster and lead them back to championship contention.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Mumbai Indians navigate this transition and who will take the helm as they prepare for the next IPL season.
