SpaceX’s Starship achieves orbital flight for the first time, deploys 26 Starlink satellites

Published:

SpaceX’s next-generation Starship rocket successfully achieved orbital flight for the first time on September 28, 2026, despite experiencing an unexpected engine shutdown during the mission. The flight, which was initially planned to last 10 hours, concluded after three hours due to the engine issue, but it still managed to deploy 26 new Starlink satellites, according to a report from ARN News Centre.

The launch took place from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas, marking the 14th flight of the Starship since 2023. Elon Musk’s company is aiming to integrate the vehicle into regular operations later this year. The mission is crucial for SpaceX, which is valued at approximately $2 trillion, as the success of Starship is pivotal to maintaining investor confidence and market worth.

The Starship, a 40-story-tall rocket, consists of a Super Heavy booster and the upper-stage Starship vessel. After launching, the Super Heavy booster successfully returned to the Gulf of Mexico for a controlled splashdown, although some engines failed during its descent. Upon reaching space, one of Starship’s three main engines shut down prematurely, leading SpaceX to initially announce that the craft would not reach orbit. However, engineers later confirmed that an engine firing could still propel the vehicle into orbit, which it successfully accomplished.

Following its orbital achievement, Starship executed a controlled descent into the Pacific Ocean, where it ultimately splashed down in a nose-up position, resulting in a fireball upon impact. SpaceX had not intended to recover the spacecraft after the mission.

Once in orbit, Starship deployed the 26 next-generation Starlink satellites at an altitude of approximately 269 km (161 miles). Musk later confirmed on social media that all satellites were operational. The V3 Starlink satellites are designed to handle ten times more data than their predecessors, which is expected to significantly enhance the network’s customer capacity and generate substantial revenue for SpaceX’s Starlink division.

This mission is part of SpaceX’s broader strategy to increase the frequency of satellite launches and support future NASA missions to the moon. Musk has indicated that he envisions Starship achieving a launch cadence of hundreds or even thousands of missions annually, a pace that would be unprecedented in the space industry.

Starship’s successful orbital flight comes just three months after SpaceX’s record-breaking IPO in June, which positioned the company as the sixth-largest in the U.S. by value and made Musk the world’s first trillionaire. The spacecraft is also set to play a critical role in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon and establish a long-term lunar presence.
