Leicestershire’s eight-point penalty lifted, but County Championship appeal ongoing

Published:

Leicestershire County Cricket Club has had eight points reinstated from their previous 27-point deduction in the County Championship, although their status in Division One remains uncertain. This adjustment follows a review of penalties related to a breach of pitch regulations during their match against Glamorgan in August, as reported by BBC Sport.

The initial penalty, which included the removal of 19 points earned from the Glamorgan match, was announced on 16 September. Leicestershire had secured 19 points from that game—16 for the win and three bonus points—both of which are still under appeal.

The Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP) had originally imposed an additional eight-point deduction, along with a suspended eight-point penalty for a year and a £5,000 fine. However, the eight-point deduction for this season has now been waived, as the CDP deemed the docking of the 19 points sufficient punishment.

Had the 27 points not been deducted, Leicestershire would have finished two points clear of the relegation zone. Currently, with the 19-point penalty still in effect, they find themselves 17 points behind Essex and face relegation if their appeal does not succeed.

The amended decision comes after the Cricket Regulator questioned whether the 19-point penalty had been adequately considered during the CDP’s initial ruling. According to the County Championship’s playing conditions, teams found guilty of producing a pitch rated as poor or below average would receive zero points from the match in question.

Leicestershire has expressed their intention to appeal the panel’s decision, with Chief Executive Emma White stating that the club’s stance remains unchanged despite the recent amendments to their penalties.
