Mike Hesson optimistic about revamped Pakistan squad ahead of third Test against England

Interim head coach Mike Hesson expressed optimism regarding Pakistan’s revamped squad as they prepare for the third Test against England, scheduled to begin on September 9 at Edgbaston. Following significant defeats in the first two matches of the series, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made drastic changes, including sending seven players home and appointing Hesson, who previously managed the white-ball team, as the new Test coach, according to Gulf Today.

Pakistan faced a heavy loss in the first Test at Headingley, losing by an innings and 103 runs, followed by a 194-run defeat at Lord’s, which allowed England to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. In response, the PCB took the extraordinary step of overhauling the squad, which included the departure of senior players such as Imam-ul Haq and Salman Ali Agha, who captained the team during Babar Azam’s injury.

Among those sent home were left-arm spinner Ali Usman, who had previously taken five wickets at Headingley, and seamer Khurram Shahzad. The seven new players called up include batsmen Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, both of whom have prior Test experience.

Hesson, who had been in Japan preparing for the Asian Games, noted that the recent changes have created a challenging environment for the players. He acknowledged that the squad is accustomed to dealing with chaos, stating that they have shown resilience despite their disappointment over the recent losses.

He emphasised the importance of assembling a balanced team not only for the upcoming Test but also for future matches, highlighting Pakistan’s reputation for producing pace bowlers and unique spin options. Hesson aims to ensure that the team can showcase its traditional strengths in the upcoming match.

As the team gears up for the final Test, Hesson’s leadership and the fresh faces in the squad may provide the necessary spark for a turnaround against England.
