Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, enhancing AI model ecosystem

Published:

Nvidia has announced a significant acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, marking one of the largest deals in its history. This move positions Nvidia, a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) chip manufacturing, at the forefront of the expanding ecosystem for open AI models, according to a report by Economy Middle East.

The acquisition includes approximately $11.9 billion for Hugging Face stockholders and an additional $1 billion earmarked for employee retention awards. This strategic purchase will provide Nvidia with direct access to a platform that enables developers to discover, test, modify, and share AI models and tools, potentially broadening its customer base for processors and computing infrastructure.

Strategic Importance of Open AI Models

Nvidia’s acquisition reflects a growing belief that open AI models, which can rival proprietary systems from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic at lower costs, will play a crucial role in the AI market. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approvals.

As major clients like Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft develop their own AI processors, Nvidia’s strategy aims to maintain its competitive edge. The company reported over $22 billion in cash at the end of July, providing ample resources for expansion within the AI sector.

Commitment to Openness

A key aspect of the acquisition is Nvidia’s commitment to keeping Hugging Face an open platform. CEO Jensen Huang stated that Hugging Face will continue to serve the entire AI ecosystem, allowing developers to choose their preferred models and computing platforms without being restricted to Nvidia technology.

Despite these assurances, some industry analysts express concerns that Nvidia’s ownership could lead to advantages for its own hardware or software on the platform. Analysts suggest that while Nvidia has pledged to maintain openness, technical integration may still favour its products.

Growth of Hugging Face

Founded in 2016, Hugging Face has become a central hub for AI developers, boasting over 18 million users and hosting more than 3 million models and 500,000 datasets. This acquisition price nearly triples Hugging Face’s previous valuation of $4.5 billion, highlighting its growing significance in the AI landscape.

The partnership between Nvidia and Hugging Face has evolved over the years, with collaborative projects aimed at integrating Nvidia’s AI supercomputing capabilities into Hugging Face’s platform. This acquisition is seen as a natural progression of their existing relationship.

Financial Strength and Future Prospects

Nvidia’s financial position is robust, with a reported revenue of $96.2 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, more than double the previous year. This financial strength positions Nvidia well to leverage the acquisition and expand its influence in the AI industry.
