A couple went ahead with their wedding in a flooded church in Hagonoy, north of Manila, despite advice to postpone as water levels rose, AFP reported in a story published by Gulf Today.
Leian Lieza Galang and Gilbert Chico, both in their 30s, married at Saint John the Baptist church with water reaching hip depth. Wedding photographer Mikko Rey Alfonso told AFP that the church had been partly submerged for almost a month.
A smaller ceremony
Alfonso said the parish had recommended a postponement because of floodwater flowing from upstream. The couple chose to proceed, and the priest conducted a shortened late-morning ceremony attended by fewer than 15 people.
The bride arrived in a rickshaw with a raised chassis, keeping her dress out of the water until she reached the church courtyard. The train of her gown had been shortened to help her move through the flooded building, the photographer said.
Footage shared on the parish’s Facebook page showed the bride being embraced by her parents beside empty pews. A photograph showed a boy carrying the rings through waist-deep water.
The report linked the flooding to unusually heavy August monsoon rains in the northern Philippines. It cited an official tally of 34 deaths from landslides and flash floods at the time of reporting.
