Two Greek Firefighters Killed as Wildfires Accelerate Across Europe

Two Greek firefighters tragically lost their lives on Wednesday while combating a wildfire on the island of Crete. This incident occurred amidst a broader escalation of wildfires across Europe, even as a major fire in Spain showed signs of stabilization.

According to public broadcaster ERT, the firefighters became trapped while transitioning between fire fronts in their vehicle. The blaze erupted earlier in the day in the Rethymno region, a popular tourist area, and was exacerbated by strong winds. Sifis Vavourakis, the president of Krya Vrysi village, described the situation as “out of control,” prompting evacuation orders for residents in three nearby villages.

The head of the EU’s emergency response center warned that Greece and Italy are likely to face increased wildfire risks in the coming weeks, raising concerns about potential disasters. Europe, currently experiencing record-breaking heatwaves, is grappling with the impacts of climate change, which is intensifying heat and drought conditions conducive to wildfires.

Major Spanish Fire Stabilized

In Spain, recent wildfires have led to large-scale evacuations, particularly in the regions of Avila and Madrid. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska cautioned that “three tough days” lie ahead, with strong winds and high temperatures still posing threats, despite some stabilization of the major fire in the area.

Authorities have issued evacuation orders for six towns in the northwestern province of Zamora, affecting approximately 1,000 residents. Spain’s weather agency AEMET reported that temperatures could reach 40 degrees Celsius in at least six regions, which have been placed on orange alert, the second-highest warning level.

Firefighters Wary of New Temperature Rise

In France, the situation remains critical as temperatures in the southwest are projected to rise from around 33°C to a peak of 41°C, according to Meteo France. Dry winds could further exacerbate the existing fires. French firefighters managed to stabilize a significant blaze west of Bordeaux overnight, allowing tramway services and hotel operations to resume near the airport.

However, officials warned that the wildfires are far from contained. The municipality of Lege-Cap-Ferret reported several flare-ups, while firefighters in Le Temple, approximately 30 km away, worked to extinguish a reigniting fire.

Evacuations and Shock at Ruined Homes

The wildfires have had a devastating impact on forests, particularly in the Landes area west of Bordeaux, where approximately 42,000 hectares of mainly pine trees have been destroyed. Authorities have evacuated around 220,000 people, including both holidaymakers and local residents, as the fire threatened the Cap Ferret peninsula, which is accessible by a single road. About 60,000 individuals have since been allowed to return.

Raphael Fohanno expressed disbelief at the destruction of his parents’ home in Biscarrosse, also affected by the wildfires. He recounted the shock of realizing that everything he knew was gone, as his family was evacuated by helicopter while he was away.

Fire in Spain’s Castellon Rages for Fifth Day

Looking ahead, danger levels in southwestern France are expected to decrease from Thursday, thanks to anticipated thunderstorms, lower temperatures, and increased humidity. However, conditions will remain high in the southeast, according to Meteo France.

In recent days, four individuals were arrested in the affected areas: one for allegedly stealing jewelry from evacuated homes, two for taking food from an evacuation center, and another for impersonating a therapist and offering paid sessions to evacuees.

In Spain, while conditions have improved in the central provinces of Avila and Madrid, a fire in eastern Castellon continues to rage, having burned over 10,000 hectares. Approximately 10,000 evacuated residents remain unable to return to their homes. In a rare moment of hope, a veterinary hospital housing dozens of horses was saved from the flames in La Vilavella, thanks to the efforts of local residents.

The frequency and intensity of heatwaves are leading to thousands of excess deaths and increasingly disrupting daily life, affecting transportation and river shipping. Drone footage from El Tiemblo in Spain’s Avila province starkly illustrated the devastation, showing charred deer carcasses in a forest reduced to ashes.
