Dubai: Travel and tourism agencies are anticipating a significant surge in demand for flights returning to the UAE during the last week of August and the first week of September. This increase is primarily driven by families returning from summer vacations in preparation for the new academic year.
Industry representatives report that occupancy rates on numerous flights from major global destinations are nearing full capacity. Travellers who have yet to secure their bookings are likely to encounter limited options, particularly for direct flights and preferred travel times.
Return Travel Demand Rises
Salah Mansour, Chief Executive Officer of STS at Dubai Link Group, noted that the market is experiencing a marked uptick in demand as the summer travel season approaches its conclusion. He emphasized that the last week of August and the initial days of September represent the peak of the annual return season. Many families who travelled during July and August are expected to return before schools reopen.
Mansour highlighted that flights to the UAE from several key destinations are showing exceptionally high occupancy rates, with some services approaching full capacity. He also mentioned that there is strong demand on routes from popular Arab cities such as Cairo, Beirut, Amman, Damascus, and Alexandria.
Travellers who have not yet booked their return flights may find their options significantly limited compared to earlier in the season, particularly for direct flights and preferred departure times. Additionally, ticket prices during this peak period are among the highest of the summer season due to increased demand and reduced seat availability. Mansour pointed out that the price difference between return tickets at the end of August and those at the beginning of the summer can be substantial on various routes.
Near-Full Occupancy on Key Routes
Alaa Al Ali, Director of Nirvana Tourism and Travel, stated that demand typically rises during the final two weeks of August and the beginning of September as families prepare to return to work and school. He explained that airlines adjust their operational capacity based on demand levels, but the concentration of return travel within a short timeframe often leads to near-full occupancy rates, especially on routes from the most popular summer destinations.
Al Ali advised travellers making new bookings to maintain flexibility with their travel dates. He suggested that moving the return date forward by a few days or delaying it until just after the peak period could provide more options and better fares. Flexibility in travel timing has become a crucial factor in securing reasonable prices during peak travel times.
Travellers Urged to Review Ticket Conditions
Amin Al Awadhi, General Manager of Al Awadhi Travel, emphasized the importance of reviewing ticket amendment and cancellation policies before altering travel plans. He noted that many airlines impose modification fees during peak periods, and travellers may face significant fare differences if alternative flights are more expensive.
Al Awadhi pointed out that the fare difference before and after ticket modifications can be considerable during peak times. He cautioned that those who wait until the last minute to change their return dates may incur significantly higher costs compared to those who make changes well in advance.
Early Airport Arrival Advised
Al Awadhi also recommended that travellers ensure their travel documents are valid and verify flight details, including departure times and arrival schedules, prior to their journeys. He advised passengers to arrive at airports well ahead of their departure times due to the anticipated increase in passenger volumes during the return season.
