Burj Khalifa Metro Station Expansion Underway: Key Changes for Commuters

A significant change in access routes to Downtown Dubai has been implemented due to the temporary closure of the bus and taxi service road at the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa metro station. This closure, mandated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), is effective immediately and will remain in place until the end of 2026. Despite this, the metro service itself will continue to operate without interruption, with the Red Line remaining fully functional.

The service road adjacent to Sheikh Zayed Road has been designated solely for construction vehicles, impacting the areas where buses stop and where passengers typically walk to and from the platform.

Reasons Behind the Closure

The closure is part of a comprehensive redevelopment project for the Burj Khalifa metro station, officially announced in January 2026. This initiative stems from a public-private partnership (P3) agreement between the RTA and Emaar Properties, aimed at enhancing one of the busiest stations in the Dubai Metro network.

The redevelopment will expand the station’s area from 6,700 square meters to 8,500 square meters. Key improvements will include upgraded entrances and pedestrian bridges, a larger concourse and platform, new escalators and lifts, as well as separated entry and exit gates. Additionally, more fare gates and new commercial facilities will be integrated, alongside landscaping works and enhanced connections to other public transport options.

The expansion is expected to increase the station’s capacity by 65%, accommodating up to 220,000 passengers daily and 12,320 passengers hourly once completed. This upgrade is crucial, especially considering the station’s current peak capacity challenges, as evidenced during high-traffic events such as New Year’s Eve when access gates were temporarily closed due to overwhelming foot traffic.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, emphasized that this project represents a strategic investment in Dubai’s urban core, directly enhancing the quality of life and improving access to the city’s iconic landmarks.

Current Changes for Commuters

Despite the ongoing construction, access to the metro station remains operational. The RTA has implemented a comprehensive traffic management plan that includes a new bus lay-by, ensuring that bus services continue during the construction phase. Additional parking facilities are available for drivers, and directional signage has been installed to guide motorists towards Jebel Ali and Bur Dubai.

However, the dedicated drop-off road for taxis and private vehicles will be closed, necessitating alternative pick-up and drop-off points nearby. Commuters should allow extra time for walking to the station entrance due to these changes. The new lay-by will serve as a bus stop, but passengers may need to consult updated signage for precise boarding and alighting locations.

Advice for Commuters

The RTA advises commuters to plan their journeys earlier than usual during the construction period, particularly when traveling to Downtown Dubai and the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa area. Anticipated increases in foot traffic due to the approaching summer tourist season may exacerbate congestion around the station.

For those who frequently use the Burj Khalifa metro station, alternative options include the Financial Centre metro station on the Red Line and the Business Bay metro station on the Yasasin line. Both stations are within walking distance of various parts of Downtown Dubai and can help distribute commuter demand during the expansion.

As of now, there is no specific end date for the closure beyond the general timeline of late 2026. The RTA has committed to providing ongoing updates as the project progresses.
