RTA Announces Temporary Closure of Al Qudra Track for Sunday Cycling Race

Date:

Cycling Tracks in Al Qudra to Close for Women’s Cycling Race

On Sunday, February 16, cycling enthusiasts and casual riders in Dubai will need to plan their day carefully, as the cycling tracks in the Al Qudra area will be temporarily closed. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced this closure on Saturday, emphasizing that it is in preparation for the women’s cycling race, a highlight of the 9th edition of the Al Salam Cycling Championship.

Closure Details

The cycling tracks will be closed from 7 AM until 6 PM, ensuring that all necessary arrangements can be made for the race, which is set to kick off at 1:30 PM. The RTA has assured the public that the tracks will reopen promptly after the conclusion of the race, allowing cyclists to return to their favorite routes. This closure is part of a broader effort to promote cycling as a sport and encourage community participation in healthy activities.

The Al Salam Cycling Championship

The Al Salam Cycling Championship is a prestigious event that has gained significant traction since its inception. This year marks the 9th edition, which began in December with the Sword of Honour race. This inaugural event celebrated the graduation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, from the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The championship aims to honor Emirati amateur cyclists and foster a spirit of competition and camaraderie among participants.

Race Categories

This year’s championship features two distinct races: a 107 km race specifically for Emirati cyclists and a more challenging 136 km elite race open to all resident female athletes and members of the GCC Cycling Federation. This inclusive approach not only highlights the talent of local cyclists but also encourages female participation in a sport that has traditionally seen lower representation from women.

Previous Events

The cycling tracks at Al Qudra were recently closed on February 9 for the third stage of the Al Salam Cycling Championship, showcasing the ongoing commitment to cycling events in the region. The championship has already seen a variety of races, including the Ruler’s Court Elite Men’s Cycling Race held on January 19. This race covered a remarkable 193 km route, starting from the historic Al Fahidi district and weaving through several of Dubai’s iconic landmarks, further promoting the beauty of cycling in the emirate.

Community Engagement

Events like the Al Salam Cycling Championship are not just about competition; they serve to engage the community and promote a healthy lifestyle. The RTA’s initiative to close the tracks for such events demonstrates a commitment to fostering a vibrant cycling culture in Dubai. By providing a platform for both amateur and elite cyclists, the championship encourages individuals of all skill levels to participate and enjoy the benefits of cycling.
