Emirates SkyCargo Strengthens Wildlife Protection Efforts by Partnering with Dogs 4 Wildlife to Combat Poaching

Emirates SkyCargo has announced a significant partnership with Dogs 4 Wildlife, a UK-based charity dedicated to protecting endangered wildlife in Africa. This collaboration aims to deploy highly trained conservation dogs to combat poaching and enhance wildlife protection efforts in Southern Africa. The initiative underscores Emirates’ ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and the fight against illegal wildlife trafficking.

Deployment of Specialist Conservation Dogs

The first phase of this partnership involves the transportation of two Belgian Malinois dogs, named Vega and Kuda, from the UK to Zimbabwe. These dogs are trained in human scent tracking and will support wildlife rangers at Matusadona National Park. The dogs are scheduled to travel from London to Harare via Dubai in late June, where they will be integrated into a new conservation K9 unit.

Commitment to Animal Welfare in Transportation

Emirates SkyCargo, the air freight division of Emirates, is recognized for its specialized live animal transportation services. The airline ensures that animals are transported with a focus on their welfare, utilizing dedicated handling processes and purpose-built facilities. This commitment is essential for the safe and humane transport of conservation dogs, which play a crucial role in wildlife protection.

Statements from Leadership

Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President of Emirates SkyCargo, emphasized the importance of collaboration in wildlife protection. He stated that the deployment of conservation dogs like Vega and Kuda is a vital step in strengthening conservation efforts on the ground. This partnership reflects Emirates SkyCargo’s broader commitment to combating illegal wildlife trade and supporting organizations that create meaningful impacts for wildlife and communities.

Darren Priddle, Founder and Volunteer Trustee of Dogs 4 Wildlife, expressed pride in partnering with Emirates SkyCargo. He noted that the deployment of these dogs represents more than just transporting animals; it signifies the introduction of specialized conservation capabilities to support wildlife rangers on the front lines of protection efforts. Priddle highlighted the mission of Dogs 4 Wildlife to safeguard endangered species and the importance of collaboration with a global organization like Emirates.

Longstanding Commitment to Wildlife Protection

This partnership aligns with Emirates’ long-standing commitment to wildlife protection. The airline maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal wildlife trade, including a ban on the transportation of hunting trophies. Emirates SkyCargo implements robust screening processes and collaborates with industry partners, government authorities, and conservation organizations to prevent the movement of illicit wildlife products through global supply chains.

Since launching its illegal wildlife trade awareness program, Emirates has trained over 46,000 employees to identify and respond to potential wildlife trafficking risks. The airline has also achieved IATA’s Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification, which includes a dedicated wildlife module aligned with the Buckingham Palace Declaration.

Industry Collaboration and Future Implications

The announcement of this partnership coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Buckingham Palace Declaration and the United for Wildlife High-Level Business Forum in London. This event highlights the critical need for cross-sector collaboration in addressing illicit wildlife trade and protecting endangered species for future generations. Emirates has been a founding signatory of the Declaration and continues to contribute to industry-wide efforts against wildlife trafficking.
