Middle East Ceasefires Strain Under Ongoing Violence as Airstrikes and Rocket Attacks Persist

Despite numerous U.S.-brokered agreements, ceasefires in the Middle East remain tenuous as violence escalates across Gaza, Lebanon, northern Israel, and the broader region. Recent airstrikes, rocket attacks, and military operations have raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of these ceasefire arrangements, underscoring the complexities involved in achieving a sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflicts.

Israeli airstrikes have targeted both Gaza and Lebanon, with Israeli forces maintaining active deployments in these areas. Concurrently, Hezbollah has launched rockets into northern Israel, while Iranian forces have conducted attacks on Kuwait’s international airport.

The persistent violence prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to remark that ceasefires in the Middle East often resemble “shooting in a more moderate manner” rather than a complete cessation of hostilities. His administration has facilitated three truces aimed at halting the fighting. While major confrontations have diminished, the reality remains that munitions continue to fall, and casualties persist.

Current Status of the Ceasefire in Gaza

The United States brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on October 10, which was intended to halt major hostilities. The agreement included provisions for Hamas to release all remaining hostages in Gaza, Israel to free Palestinian prisoners, a phased Israeli withdrawal, increased humanitarian aid, and the opening of a crossing into Egypt.

Plans to enhance the ceasefire proposed by the Trump administration included disarmament of Hamas, the establishment of a new Gaza government excluding the group, reconstruction efforts in Gaza, and a complete Israeli withdrawal. However, despite the release of hostages, disputes have arisen over the extent of aid permitted by Israel. Hamas has not agreed to disarm, significant reconstruction has yet to commence, and Israel has expressed intentions to expand its territorial control in Gaza.

Israeli airstrikes have continued, resulting in the deaths of over 900 Palestinians since the truce, including nine fatalities reported on Thursday. Additionally, sporadic attacks by Palestinian militants have led to the deaths of four Israeli soldiers in Gaza.

Ongoing Warfare in Lebanon

Following conflicts in 2024, a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, backed by Iran, was only partially implemented, with both parties accusing each other of violations. Renewed hostilities erupted in March after a war against Iran commenced, with Hezbollah firing into Israel and Israeli forces conducting airstrikes in southern Lebanon.

On April 16, Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon after rare discussions between Israeli and Lebanese representatives. Although intense fighting persisted in the south, Israel largely refrained from targeting Beirut. Since the ceasefire announcement, Israeli strikes have resulted in hundreds of casualties, bringing the total death toll to over 3,500 since March 2, according to Lebanese authorities, who do not differentiate between civilians and combatants. Israel has reported 26 of its soldiers and four civilians killed in Hezbollah attacks since March.

Iran seeks to incorporate a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of any broader agreement to conclude its conflict with the United States and Israel, as well as to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, Trump announced that Lebanon and Israel had agreed to implement a new ceasefire contingent upon Hezbollah vacating southern regions. However, Hezbollah has rejected this proposal, and fighting has continued.

Prospects for a U.S.-Iran Ceasefire

The U.S. and Israel initiated attacks on Iran on February 28, aiming to dismantle its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Both nations expressed hopes for the overthrow of Iran’s ruling theocratic regime. This followed a 12-day conflict last year in which Israel, later joined by the U.S., targeted numerous Iranian nuclear facilities and military leaders.

Despite the deaths of many senior Iranian figures, Iran has managed to close the Strait of Hormuz, significantly impacting Gulf energy exports and the global economy. In early April, the United States announced a ceasefire with Iran, with subsequent discussions aimed at achieving a lasting end to hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, and negotiating Iran’s nuclear program.

However, despite multiple rounds of indirect negotiations mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, no comprehensive agreement has been reached. A potential deal would likely defer discussions on the nuclear issue to a later stage. Meanwhile, exchanges of fire between the parties have continued, with Iran also targeting Persian Gulf states, including Kuwait this week.
