For France, the likelihood of extreme fire conditions has doubled.

The report highlights that warming trends over the past 26 years have tripled the odds of severe fire risk conditions in Spain and increased the chances in France by 40%. These findings are particularly concerning as they coincide with a notable increase in wildfire activity across Southern Europe over the last eight years.

Doubling of Extreme Fire Weather Days

A separate study published concurrently found that the number of days in Southern Europe characterized by extreme fire-prone weather has more than doubled compared to earlier decades. This research, conducted before the recent wildfires, analyzed various weather factors, including air temperature, humidity, drought conditions, and wind.

Friederike Otto, a climate scientist from Imperial College London and coordinator at World Weather Attribution, noted that the changes in fire weather conditions in Spain are among the most significant she has observed. This summer marks Spain’s hottest on record, following a wet January that allowed vegetation to flourish before a severe drought exacerbated wildfire risks.

Contributing Factors to Wildfire Severity

The situation in Spain is further complicated by land abandonment, which has left unmanaged vegetation susceptible to drying out. In France, the Bordeaux region’s dense pine groves also contribute to the fire risk, as these trees are highly flammable.

While the rapid analysis conducted by World Weather Attribution has not undergone peer review, Otto and her colleagues employed scientifically accepted methodologies. Many of their reports are later published in peer-reviewed journals, reinforcing their credibility.

The team assessed how climate change—stemming from the combustion of fossil fuels—has intensified the likelihood of such severe fires. They compared current fire weather severity levels to historical data and projected what conditions would be like if global temperatures were 2.5 degrees Celsius cooler, the amount of warming since pre-industrial times.

Expert Insights on Fire Behavior

Jacob Bendix, a fire scientist at Syracuse University, emphasized that the findings corroborate existing knowledge in the field. He stated that extreme heat and drought conditions have long been recognized as factors that facilitate the ignition and rapid spread of wildfires. Bendix remarked that the general trajectory of these events has been tragically predictable due to the ongoing impacts of anthropogenic climate change.

Raúl Cordero, a climate scientist at the University of Groningen, reported in the journal Scientific Reports that the increase in extreme fire weather days is not merely a matter of frequency; these days are also approximately 50% more intense than those recorded from 1981 to 2010.

The Challenge of Fire Management

Cordero noted that while the number of fires and the area burned in Southern Europe had decreased significantly from the 1980s to 2018, improvements in fire management and suppression techniques have been overshadowed by the rapid escalation of climate change impacts. He stated that no amount of resources can effectively combat fire propagation under such extreme weather conditions.

John Abatzaglou, a fire scientist at the University of California Merced, echoed these sentiments, asserting that the findings make it clear that climate change is not a distant concern; it is a present reality.

Otto stressed the urgent need to cease fossil fuel combustion, warning that continued reliance on these energy sources will exacerbate global temperatures and worsen fire weather conditions. She cautioned that there are limits to how much society can adapt to these changing conditions.
