Two-time Olympic gold medallist and President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, will step in as special advisor for sports at the flagship GEMS School of Research and Innovation that will open in August.

In an exciting development for the world of education and sports, Sebastian Coe has taken on the role of special advisor for sports at the prestigious GEMS School of Research and Innovation (SRI), set to open its doors in August. Known for his illustrious career as a two-time Olympic gold medallist and his current position as the President of World Athletics, Coe brings a wealth of experience and insight into elite sports and youth development.

Coe’s involvement is more than just a ceremonial appointment; it reflects a profound commitment to enhancing the educational experience for students at GEMS SRI. “The facilities and ambition at SRI are world-class,” he expressed. “But more importantly, the vision to develop well-rounded global citizens who understand teamwork, perseverance, and personal bests is one I wholeheartedly share.” This vision aligns seamlessly with the dynamic and holistic approach that GEMS Education aims to provide.

The ethos of the GEMS School of Research and Innovation revolves around excellence in physical education and wellbeing. In his advisory capacity, Coe will collaborate closely with the school’s senior leadership team to weave physical education into the very fabric of student life. This strategic integration is designed to support students as they cultivate self-confidence, resilience, and healthy lifelong habits—a goal that speaks to modern educational needs.

One of the most striking features of GEMS SRI is its state-of-the-art facilities. The school is touted as the “most expensive” in its class, and for good reason. Among its impressive infrastructure are a 400-meter running track, a 50-meter Olympic-standard swimming pool, a FIFA-standard elevated football pitch, and a top-tier gymnasium. These facilities are not just for show; they represent a commitment to fostering athletic excellence alongside academic achievement.

Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education, highlighted Coe’s appointment, stating that his experience will be invaluable in crafting an integrated and future-ready education at GEMS SRI. This emphasis on collaboration between education and sports signifies a progressive approach towards holistic student development, one that is increasingly essential in today’s fast-paced world.

Furthermore, Coe is not alone in this initiative. The school has also recently appointed notable figures to its advisory team, including former UK Foreign Secretary William Hague, former Chief Inspector of Ofsted Amanda Spielman, and former UK Minister of State for Schools Nick Gibb. The breadth of experience and expertise that these advisors bring to the table underscores the school’s aim to not only provide top-tier education but also to cultivate a learning environment enriched by diverse perspectives.
