Dubai Metro Expansion: New Blue and Gold Lines Set to Transform Commuting with 14 Stations and 42km of Connectivity

Dubai is set to enhance its public transport infrastructure significantly with the introduction of two new Metro lines: the Blue Line and the Gold Line. This expansion aims to improve connectivity across the city, aligning with the 2040 Dubai Urban Master Plan, which envisions a ‘20-minute city’ where residents can access essential services within a short walk or commute.

Since its inception in 2009, the Dubai Metro has transported over 2.8 billion passengers, providing efficient and reliable transit options. Currently, the Metro comprises two main lines—the Red and Green—spanning nearly 90 kilometers. The upcoming Blue Line will introduce the world’s tallest Metro station, while the Gold Line will further extend the network.

Dubai Metro Blue Line

Construction of the Blue Line commenced last year, with an anticipated opening date of September 9, 2029, coinciding with the Metro’s 20th anniversary. The line will stretch 30 kilometers and include 14 stations, representing a substantial investment of Dh56 billion in Dubai’s transportation framework. Approximately 15.5 kilometers of the Blue Line will be underground, while the remaining 14.5 kilometers will be above ground. This new line is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the city by 20%.

Routes and Area Coverage

The Blue Line will feature two primary routes. The first route will cover 21 kilometers and include 10 stations, starting from the Al Khor Interchange Station on the Green Line. It will traverse key areas such as Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Ras Al Khor, concluding at International City 1. An underground interchange station at this stop will facilitate access to International City 2 and 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Academic City, with the route terminating at Al Ruwaiyah 3 Depot.

The second route will encompass four stations, beginning at the Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line. It will pass through Mirdif and Al Warqa before connecting to the International City 1 underground interchange station.

The Blue Line will connect nine strategic areas in Dubai, providing direct access to public transport at locations including:

  • Dubai International Airport
  • Mirdif
  • Al Warqa
  • International City 1 and 2
  • Dubai Silicon Oasis
  • Academic City
  • Ras Al Khor Industrial Area
  • Dubai Creek Harbour
  • Dubai Festival City

Facilities and Key Features

The Blue Line’s 14 stations will comprise nine elevated and five underground stations, along with three major interchange stations. The design of the elevated stations draws inspiration from seashells, while the interiors reflect thematic elements of earth, water, fire, air, and heritage.

Commuters can expect modern infrastructure and amenities at each station, including natural lighting and premium materials. Notable features of the Blue Line include:

  • First Metro Bridge Over Dubai Creek: This 1.3-kilometer bridge will connect Al Jaddaf to Dubai Creek Harbour, offering scenic views of the waterway.
  • Largest Underground Interchange Station: The International City 1 station will be the largest in the Dubai Metro system, covering 44,000 square meters and accommodating 350,000 passengers daily.
  • World’s Tallest Metro Station: Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the station will rise to 74 meters and feature spacious interiors with limestone finishes and landscaped areas.

Dubai Metro Gold Line

On April 22, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the Dh34 billion Gold Line project, which is expected to serve 1.5 million residents. This line will extend the Dubai Metro network by 25%, linking it to existing lines and the Etihad Rail. Daily ridership is projected to reach 465,000 passengers by 2040, with an opening date set for September 9, 2032.

Routes and Area Coverage

As the first fully integrated underground Metro route in Dubai, the Gold Line will span 42 kilometers and enhance connectivity to 55 major real estate developments currently under construction. The line will feature an advanced tunnel network, doubling the existing number of Metro tunnels.

The Gold Line will include 18 stations covering 15 strategic areas, starting from Al Ghubaiba in Dubai’s historic center and concluding at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Four interchange stations will be established at:

  • Al Ghubaiba
  • Business Bay
  • Jumeirah Golf Estates
  • Etihad Rail Station

While specific station locations have yet to be confirmed, the Dubai Metro Network Plan for 2032 identifies key communities expected to benefit from the Gold Line, including:

  • Al Ghubaiba
  • Al Bada
  • Al Barsha
  • Al Quoz Industrial Area
  • Al Merkadh
  • Al Wasl
  • Al Satwa
  • Arabian Ranches
  • Bur Dubai
  • Burj Khalifa
  • Business Bay
  • Dubai Hills
  • Dubai Motor City
  • Dubai Production City
  • Dubai Studio City
  • Dubai Sports City
  • JVC
  • JVT
  • Majan
  • Mohammed Bin Rashid City
  • Nad Al Sheba
  • Zabeel

The expansion of the Dubai Metro network through the Blue and Gold Lines is poised to transform commuting in the city, enhancing accessibility and connectivity for residents and visitors alike.
