Ambassador Jemal highlighted significant infrastructure projects, including a new airport in Bishoftu, which is expected to be one of Africa’s largest, with a capacity of up to 110 million passengers annually. On the topic of peace and security, he reiterated that both nations share a fundamental belief that peace must be supported by development and prosperity. In the realm of energy and climate action, the Ambassador noted Ethiopia’s heavy reliance on renewable energy and its selection as the host for the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP32, underscoring its growing leadership in climate initiatives. He highlighted Ethiopia’s “Green Legacy Initiative,” which has seen the planting of over 48 billion seedlings, significantly transforming the country’s environmental landscape.

Ambassador Jemal commended the UAE’s leadership in advancing the clean energy transition and its successful hosting of COP28. He expressed Ethiopia’s interest in leveraging the UAE’s experience in organizing major global events, particularly in technical, logistical, and stakeholder engagement aspects.

At the cultural level, the Ambassador pointed out that over 300,000 Ethiopians reside in the UAE, contributing to its development while strengthening bilateral ties. He emphasized the importance of education and scholarship programs, particularly those supported by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, in cultivating future leaders who will act as ambassadors of cooperation between the two nations.

He stressed the need to institutionalize cultural exchange, expand education and vocational training, and enhance interfaith cooperation, highlighting the shared Abrahamic traditions and historical ties between Ethiopia and the UAE, including Ethiopia’s role as a refuge for early Muslims.
