Radisson Hotel Group Surpasses 100 Hotels in Africa, Strengthening Expansion Strategy
Radisson Hotel Group has achieved a notable milestone by operating and developing over 100 hotels across Africa. This expansion is anchored by the Radisson Blu brand, which remains a cornerstone of the Group’s legacy. The Radisson brand has emerged as the fastest-growing segment, bolstered by a robust conversion strategy and a solid pipeline that continues to yield new openings. In the past year alone, the Group has signed more than 15 new hotels, adding approximately 2,500 rooms, including entries into new markets such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe. The Group is currently participating in the Future Hospitality Summit Africa in Nairobi, further emphasizing its commitment to enhancing its presence and forging strategic partnerships throughout the continent.
Growth Trajectory and Market Focus
Over the last five years, Radisson and Radisson Blu have consistently ranked among the most signed brands in Africa, boasting one of the highest shares of cumulative openings. The past year has set a new benchmark, with over 2,500 rooms signed and multiple market entries. Key growth markets include Morocco, South Africa, and Nigeria, where the Group is intensifying its efforts to expand its brand distribution.
Ramsay Rankoussi, Regional Chief Development Officer for Radisson Hotel Group, noted that the Group’s success in crossing the 100-hotel threshold in Africa is a result of adhering to a focused strategy. He emphasized the importance of quality conversions and partnerships with owners who share the Group’s ambitions. The next phase of growth will concentrate on deepening the Group’s presence in Morocco and Nigeria, optimizing its footprint in South Africa, and enhancing its resort offerings to align with traveler preferences.
Resilience in Nigeria and Strategic Developments
Nigeria exemplifies the Group’s resilient business model, with 13 hotels currently in operation and additional properties in the pipeline. Abuja, in particular, is witnessing significant growth, with three hotels planned that will add a total of 458 keys.
In South Africa, the Group is reshaping its strategy by prioritizing Cape Town and targeting growth in secondary cities such as Durban and Pretoria. The focus is also shifting towards leisure corridors, including Kruger National Park, Sun City, and the Garden Route. Plans are underway to enter Zanzibar and explore lodge, safari, and affiliation opportunities in Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia to cater to the increasing demand for nature-based experiences.
Conversion Strategy and Recent Signings
Conversions have become a vital strategy for achieving scale and speed. In the last five years, over 15 hotels, totaling nearly 3,000 rooms, have been added to the portfolio through conversions. This approach has enabled the Group to lead openings across the continent while maintaining high brand standards and considering the interests of hotel owners.
