Dubai Prepares for Record-Breaking Burj2Burj Half Marathon
Dubai is gearing up to host one of the most anticipated road running events in the region tomorrow. The Burj2Burj Half Marathon is returning with an impressive roster of over 13,700 runners, marking a significant milestone for this popular race.
The Race Overview
The 21-kilometer race kicks off at 6:30 AM, uniting elite athletes and amateur runners alike on a unique city course that showcases Dubai’s iconic landmarks. This event, organized by World’s Iconic and backed by the Dubai Sports Council, has rapidly become a highlight in the global road running scene.
This year’s race sees participation from more than 13,700 runners, both local and international, solidifying its status as one of the largest half marathons in the Middle East. The growing number of international entries each year further underscores its expanding appeal.
Course Highlights
The Burj2Burj Half Marathon begins at Emirates Towers and concludes at Jumeirah Gardens. Along the way, runners will pass by some of Dubai’s most recognizable sites, such as the Museum of the Future, the Burj Khalifa, and the Burj Al Arab. This urban route not only offers competitive racing conditions but also includes the vibrant support of spectators lining the streets.
A Commitment to Sports
Issa Sharif, the Director of Sports Events at the Dubai Sports Council, emphasized that this event reflects Dubai’s dedication to being a leading global destination for sporting competitions. He noted that races like the Burj2Burj epitomize the emirate’s commitment to promoting health and wellness, creating unforgettable experiences for both residents and visitors.
Despite being in its third year, the Burj2Burj Half Marathon has shown remarkable growth. Participation surged by more than 170% from the inaugural event to the second edition, followed by another 50% increase for the current one. Notably, international entrants now represent over 30% of the total participants, showcasing the race’s rising international stature.
Elite Competitors Take Center Stage
The 2026 edition boasts a stellar lineup of elite runners. Leading the men’s field is Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion, who has recorded an impressive half marathon personal best of 59:21. He will face tough competition from Alphonce Simbu, the 2025 World Marathon Champion, and Germany’s Richard Ringer, the 2022 European champion.
In the women’s category, Kenya’s Irene Cheptai, the world cross country champion and bronze medalist at the recent Chicago Marathon, headlines the entries. She is set to go up against Jacqueline Cherono, the 2025 Rotterdam Marathon winner, and Alexandra Bell from the UK, a two-time European cross country champion and Olympic finalist.
Competitive Prizes Await
Prize money at the Burj2Burj will be awarded across various categories, encouraging strong performances among the elite athletes. The top ten finishers in both men’s and women’s races will receive cash prizes, with the first-place winner taking home Dh40,000. Second place is worth Dh20,000, while third place garners Dh16,000, with additional payments extending to the tenth position.
Moreover, any athlete breaking the 60-minute barrier will receive extra bonuses, along with designated awards for Emirati runners and various age group categories, enhancing the competitive atmosphere of the race day.
