NAAC Issues Show Cause Notice to Al Falah University Over False Accreditation Claims

Introduction to the Allegations

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has recently taken significant action against Al Falah University, a private institution based in Faridabad. The Council has issued a show cause notice, citing concerns over the university’s misleading claims regarding its accreditation status. This notice underscores the importance of transparency and honesty in higher education institutions, especially concerning their credibility and recognition.

Misleading Accreditations on the University Website

The roots of this controversy lie in statements made on Al Falah University’s official website. It claims, “Al-Falah University is an endeavour of Al-Falah Charitable Trust, which has been running three colleges on the campus.” The website also highlights that institutions such as the Al Falah School of Engineering and Technology, Brown Hill College of Engineering and Technology, and Al-Falah School of Education and Training have all received an ‘A’ grade from NAAC.

However, NAAC has firmly stated that this information is completely inaccurate. The claims mislead not only prospective students but also their parents and other stakeholders about the university’s legitimacy and accreditation status.

Points Raised in the Show Cause Notice

NAAC’s Executive Committee outlined several critical queries in the notice:

  1. What actions should be taken against Al Falah University, including potential legal ramifications?
  2. Should the university be disqualified from future assessments and accreditations?
  3. Should NAAC consider recommending to the University Grants Commission (UGC) the withdrawal of the university’s recognition under sections 2(f) and 12B?
  4. Should there be recommendations to the National Medical Commission (NMC) regarding the withdrawal of recognition for the university’s NMC-approved programs?
  5. What steps should be suggested to the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) about the university’s accredited teacher education programs?
  6. Should the state government (Government of Haryana) be advised to take appropriate actions against the university?
  7. Should NAAC advocate for the withdrawal of AICTE recognition for programs offered by the university?

Immediate Actions Required

In light of these concerns, Al Falah University has been instructed to swiftly remove any mentions of accreditation from its website and other public communications. This compliance must be reported back to NAAC within seven days. This measures serve to rectify the situation and mitigate the potential negative impact on students and parents relying on accurate information for enrollment decisions.

A Troubling Context

This situation is further complicated by a recent scandal involving two professors from Al Falah University. Dr. Umar un Nabi and Dr. Muzammil Shakeel have been implicated as key figures in a tragic car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, which resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries. Following the incident, at least 52 individuals, including faculty and students associated with the university, were questioned by the police regarding potential connections to the attack.

Background of Al Falah University

Established in 1997, Al Falah University asserts its legitimacy based on recognition granted in 2014 through the Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Act. It claims to be recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is currently led by Vice Chancellor Dr. Bhupinder Kaur Anan. However, the recent developments cast a shadow over the institution’s reputation and raise questions about the efficacy of its internal governance and adherence to accreditation standards.

The Need for Clear Guidelines in Education

Situations like those involving Al Falah University highlight the critical need for more stringent oversight and clear guidelines in educational institutions. As education becomes increasingly crucial for personal and professional growth, stakeholders must prioritize credibility, ensuring that students receive quality education from accredited institutions. Accurate accreditation status is foundational for maintaining trust and integrity in the education sector.

Such developments also stress the importance of ongoing evaluations of institutions to ensure they meet necessary standards and provide a safe, reputable learning environment. This instance serves as a reminder that accountability and transparency must always accompany the quest for knowledge and advancement in education.
