Huawei Introduces Wheelchair Mode on HUAWEI Watch GT6 Series

At the recent GITEX 2025 event, Huawei showcased an innovative new feature called Wheelchair Mode for its HUAWEI Watch GT6 Series. This development illustrates the company’s commitment to advancing inclusive health technologies. The feature, which was inspired by His Excellency Majid Rashed, President of the Asian Paralympic Committee, is set to be rolled out via a global software update in early November, coinciding with the Dubai Ride event.

Transforming Activity Tracking for Wheelchair Users

Wheelchair Mode aims to revolutionize how individuals who rely on wheelchairs monitor their physical activity. By utilizing advanced inertial measurement units (IMUs) alongside cutting-edge push-detection algorithms and wheel rotation sensors, this feature can assess push frequency, force, speed, and the distance traveled. By integrating this with Huawei’s existing health sensor suite—which includes continuous heart-rate monitoring, SpO₂ tracking, calorie estimation, and pressure/torque sensing—users gain a comprehensive wellness profile tailored specifically for wheelchair propulsion.

A Commitment to Inclusivity

H.E. Majid Rashed praised Huawei’s proactive approach in implementing this much-needed feature. “When I first suggested the idea of a wheelchair mode, I hoped to see a technology brand take the step toward true inclusivity. Huawei not only listened but acted with great determination. By bringing this feature to life, Huawei has shown a genuine commitment to empowering people of determination and ensuring that technology serves everyone equally,” he remarked.

Addressing a Global Need

With over 80 million individuals globally relying on wheelchairs for mobility, Wheelchair Mode offers more than just a means of tracking fitness. For these users, it serves as an essential tool for health monitoring, injury prevention, personal empowerment, and enhanced safety.

Insights from Huawei’s Leadership

Bruce Li, Country Manager of Huawei CBG for the UAE, expressed the company’s philosophy on technology: “At Huawei, we believe that technology should empower everyone and our commitment to people of determination drives us to develop inclusive innovations that make everyday life smarter, healthier, and more connected for all.” With the impending launch in November, aligned with Dubai Ride, Huawei aims to provide features that truly encapsulate their vision of inclusive innovation.

Features that Enhance Everyday Life

The HUAWEI WATCH GT6 Series enriches the user experience through its standout capabilities. With an impressive battery life of up to 21 days, users can enjoy extended use without constant recharging. The watch is crafted from durable premium materials ideal for everyday wear, and its TruSense health management system offers valuable insights into cardiovascular health, emotional well-being, and overall fitness.

Safety at the Forefront

In addition to its health features, the watch incorporates vital safety enhancements, such as fall detection and emergency alerting capabilities. This feature can automatically notify designated contacts in case of an accident, providing wheelchair users with an additional layer of security and reassurance.

Advancing Inclusive Technologies

Beyond the HUAWEI Watch GT6 Series, Huawei is continually striving to innovate in the realm of inclusive technology. The company’s “Trouble-free Hearing” app, developed utilizing Huawei Cloud AI, offers real-time speech recognition, producing subtitles and enabling on-demand sign language interpretation for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Under the TECH4ALL inclusion initiative, Huawei also implements features that allow millions of users with visual and hearing impairments to navigate their smartphones and tablets more seamlessly.

Availability

The new Wheelchair Mode for the HUAWEI Watch GT6 Series is expected to be available through a software update in early November, with global promotion kicking off in Dubai. This initiative underscores Huawei’s profound dedication to making technology accessible and beneficial for all segments of society.
