Dubai Approves Autonomous Driving Trials for Pony.ai and WeRide

Date:

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has taken a significant step towards the future of urban mobility by granting permission to two leading autonomous driving companies, Pony.ai and WeRide, to test their self-driving vehicles on the city’s roads. This move marks a critical phase in Dubai’s robust plans to integrate fully autonomous robotaxi services into its transportation network, further positioning the city as a global hub for innovative smart transport solutions.

Pony.ai, a prominent player in the autonomous driving industry, has commenced pilot testing in selected parts of Dubai. Their goal is ambitious yet aligned with Dubai’s futuristic vision: to launch a driverless taxi service by 2026. This initiative isn’t happening in isolation; it’s part of a broader strategy aimed at converting 25% of all travel within the emirate to self-driving modes by 2030. Notably, Pony.ai’s seventh-generation autonomous technology, which began mass production this year, powers this push. The company’s extensive fleet now exceeds 500 units operating in key urban centers across China and is extending its presence globally, including continuous testing in Seoul and Luxembourg, as well as exploring integration with Uber’s platform for the Middle East.

WeRide, another high-profile autonomous vehicle firm, also recently secured a trial permit from the RTA to launch their robotaxi trials across Dubai. Their approach focuses initially on major commercial and residential areas, with plans to expand coverage to iconic sites such as Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai International Airport, alongside various downtown locations. Starting with a fleet of 50 robotaxi GXR vehicles, WeRide aims for bold expansion, projecting a fleet grow-up to 1,000 vehicles in the Middle East by 2030 and tens of thousands in the longer term. Their trials are already underway in central Dubai, and they intend to launch safety officer-supported testing via the Uber platform, targeting fully autonomous commercial operations by 2026.

A key highlight of WeRide’s progress was announced at the 2025 Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport, where they signed a memorandum of understanding with the RTA to partner on the Dubai Autonomous Zone – an innovative area dedicated to testing and deploying autonomous vehicle technologies. Moreover, WeRide is not confined to Dubai alone; they are also conducting fully driverless robotaxi tests in Abu Dhabi, underscoring their regional commitment.

Together, these initiatives from Pony.ai and WeRide illustrate Dubai’s proactive role in championing the adoption of autonomous vehicles. The city’s leadership is fostering collaboration between technology providers, regulators, and transport operators to bring robotaxis from concept to mainstream reality. This integrated approach combines advanced technology, rigorous testing, and strategic partnerships to create safer, more efficient, and sustainable transport solutions for residents and visitors alike.

As these companies continue their trials and gradually build out fleets, Dubai’s transport landscape is set for a transformative evolution. Self-driving vehicles promise to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and provide convenient, on-demand mobility options — a glimpse into how smart cities of the future will function seamlessly.

With permission now granted and trials underway, the road ahead for robotaxis in Dubai is opening wide, paving the way for a new era in urban transportation.
