The Global Encounters Festival 2025 is a weeklong event reflecting the vibrant tapestry of cultures, creativity, and athleticism. From July 20 to 27, this international celebration brings together over 4,000 young artists and athletes from more than 50 countries at multiple iconic venues in Dubai. With a vibrant program featuring sports tournaments, art exhibitions, musical performances, cultural experiences, and interactive workshops, the festival beautifully showcases Dubai’s reputation as a global hub for creativity and innovation.

Inauguration at DWTC

The festival was officially inaugurated by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, at the Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC). The event drew an audience exceeding 25,000 visitors, including esteemed dignitaries such as H.H. Prince Aly Mohammed Aga Khan and H.H. Prince Amyn Mohammed Aga Khan. Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, the festival serves as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to fostering unity and creativity.

A Message of Unity and Coexistence

In his keynote address, Sheikh Nahyan emphasized the importance of the festival in embodying the UAE’s core values of tolerance, coexistence, and global collaboration. He remarked on the unique capability of sports and the arts to promote understanding among diverse cultures. Celebrating the presence of the Aga Khan family, he noted their strong commitment to preserving Islamic heritage and the role each participant plays in fostering peaceful international relations.

He stated, “You have assembled in Dubai under our country’s welcoming Arab tent that has sheltered a peaceful and innovative population at this global crossroads. This city and this country are showing the world that people from different nations, different ethnicities, different religions, and different cultures can live and work together in peace and harmony.” Sheikh Nahyan’s inspiring words set the tone for a festival centered on friendship, creativity, and goodwill.

Empowering the Next Generation

The Global Encounters Festival aims to empower the next generation of changemakers. It serves as a platform for young leaders who are excelling in their respective fields while advancing social impact and intercultural dialogue. Participants include emerging artists, elite athletes, and civic leaders dedicated to fostering a brighter future.

His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan observed, “The festival is not only a celebration of artistic and athletic talent – it is a testament to the enduring values that unite us as a global community.” By cultivating knowledge and encouraging young people to lead lives filled with purpose, the festival reinforces the critical role youth play as bridge-builders in today’s interconnected world.

Collaboration and Community Roots

Organized in partnership with the Ismaili community and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), the festival is a reflection of longstanding collaborations aimed at promoting inclusive growth and sustainable development. Aligning its initiatives with the UAE’s Year of Community 2025, the festival embodies principles of inclusion, sustainability, and innovation.

Commitment to Sustainability

One noteworthy aspect of this year’s festival is its unwavering commitment to sustainability. Attendees can experience electric rideshare options and zero-waste venues, showcasing that environmental stewardship is at the forefront of this event. Participants are also contributing to the Roots for Change initiative, an ambitious global campaign aimed at planting 1 million trees worldwide to support the Net Zero 2030 objectives. This initiative transforms sustainability from a mere concept into a tangible movement.

An Opportunity for Future Leaders

Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Dubai World Trade Centre Authority, highlighted that youth development, talent mobility, and cross-border collaboration are essential for long-term economic growth. The festival plays a crucial role in engaging tomorrow’s leaders and enhancing Dubai’s position as a global hub for innovation and cultural exchange.

Mahir Julfar, EVP of DWTC, expressed pride in hosting such a purpose-driven event, which is set to attract a significant number of visitors. “The Global Encounters Festival exemplifies the spirit of unity, service, and excellence that the Ismaili community aspires to worldwide,” noted Malik Talib, Chair of the Ismaili Leaders’ International Forum.

Emphasizing Relationship Building

As the festival unfolds, it offers a dynamic platform for participants to express their talents and forge lasting friendships across borders. The multi-faceted nature of the program encourages dialogue and collaboration, reinforcing the commitment of all involved to improve the societies in which they live, serving as champions of peace, pluralism, and shared humanity.

In this vibrant setting filled with cultural exchange and youthful energy, the Global Encounters Festival 2025 stands as a powerful testament to what can be achieved when creativity and collaboration intertwine in pursuit of a better world.
