She Returned Dh700 After Two Years: How a Minor Accident Sparked an Unlikely Friendship in Dubai

A minor parking-lot accident in Dubai led to an unexpected friendship and an act of integrity that Indian national Mallika Boobna never anticipated. This incident not only highlighted the values of honesty and kindness but also underscored the unique social fabric of life in Dubai.

A New Beginning in Dubai

Mallika Boobna, a partner at the real estate firm Marrfa, relocated from London to Dubai in 2024. Having relied on the Tube for her daily commutes in London, she recognized the necessity of learning to drive in Dubai, where her work involved frequent visits to various properties. Boobna resided in Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT) while her workplace was in Business Bay, making daily taxi rides impractical. After four months of preparation, she obtained her driver’s license.

On her first day behind the wheel in October 2024, Boobna borrowed her uncle’s Audi and headed to a hotel for a meeting with a developer. While attempting to park, she opted to turn into the space instead of reversing, a decision that led to an unfortunate incident.

The Accident and Its Aftermath

As she maneuvered into the parking spot, Boobna heard a scratching sound that sent her into a panic. She expressed her anxiety, noting the dual concern of damaging someone else’s vehicle and the fact that she was driving her uncle’s expensive car. Her colleague, who accompanied her, suggested leaving a note for the other driver.

Boobna took this advice to heart and wrote an apology, including her contact information for any necessary follow-up regarding repairs. The driver of the other car, Julia, later reached out to express her gratitude for Boobna’s honesty. Julia appreciated that they had left their contact details, stating, “You could have easily just left. Don’t worry about this.” Julia’s vehicle was a rental, and she assured Boobna that she would handle the details with the rental company.

A Surprising Revelation

A few days later, Julia sent Boobna a receipt indicating that the repair costs were only Dh800, not the Dh1,500 initially communicated. Julia offered to return the Dh700 difference, a gesture that took Boobna by surprise. She remarked on the rarity of such honesty in today’s world, acknowledging that Julia had no obligation to return the money. “She could have very easily kept the money, and she would not have done anything wrong if she did so,” Boobna stated.

This unexpected act of integrity led to a cordial relationship between the two women. Over the following months, they exchanged holiday greetings and maintained contact, with Julia inviting Boobna to visit her in Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR).

Reflections on Community and Kindness

Boobna, originally from Patna in Bihar, India, moved to London at the age of 17 to pursue her studies in finance and work with international companies. Her decision to relocate to Dubai was spurred by a desire for new opportunities and a change in lifestyle. She noted that her life in London had become stagnant, and she sought a more dynamic environment.

Reflecting on her experience, Boobna emphasized that the kindness displayed in her situation is emblematic of the community spirit in Dubai. She contrasted this with her experiences in London, where she observed a more negative outlook among residents. “In Dubai, we thrive! That’s why, when a good thing happens, people want to share that with others,” she explained.

Looking Ahead

As Boobna and Julia prepare to meet for coffee, they look forward to reconnecting and sharing laughter. Their story serves as a reminder of the unexpected friendships that can arise from everyday situations and the importance of integrity in fostering community ties.
