UAE Report Accelerates Obesity Intervention to Boost Economic Growth and Social Development by 2031

Dubai: A recent report from the UAE, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, outlines significant benefits of obesity intervention across various sectors, including health, economy, society, and education. This initiative aligns with the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision, aiming to enhance the nation’s overall well-being and productivity.

The report was presented in the presence of Dr. Maria Hanif Al Qassim, Assistant Undersecretary for Policies and Economic Studies at the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. She emphasized the report’s timely relevance, noting its focus on the overlooked impacts of obesity not just on health, but also on economic and social development. Dr. Al Qassim highlighted the importance of utilizing data to assess the real effects of weight loss, which can inform policy-making and foster collaboration among government entities, the health sector, insurance providers, and employers.

The UAE is committed to prioritizing health as a national objective within its developmental framework. Dr. Al Qassim stated that a healthy and productive population is essential for enhancing quality of life, driving innovation, and ensuring economic resilience.

Key Findings of the Report

Titled “Beneath the Surface: The Hidden Socioeconomic Impacts of Weight Loss,” the report identifies a substantial opportunity for the UAE to realize both health and economic benefits through timely and effective obesity interventions. It estimates that these initiatives could assist over 1.2 million adults in overcoming obesity by 2031, potentially contributing $51 billion (Dh187 billion) to the GDP and saving $1.5 billion (Dh5.51 billion) in healthcare costs.

Fadi Fara, CEO of Whiteshield, stated that the report reveals the extensive benefits of weight loss and obesity treatment in the UAE. He noted that effective obesity treatment policies are not only beneficial for health but also represent sound economic strategies. With advancements in research and innovation, there is a unique opportunity to tackle the economic and social burdens of obesity more effectively than ever before.

Implications for Workforce and Economic Growth

Leena Aziz, Senior Director of Corporate and Government Affairs for Gulf at Lilly, remarked on the multifaceted nature of obesity as a chronic disease that affects individual health, workforce productivity, and long-term national development. She acknowledged the UAE’s progress in prioritizing health within its national agenda and emphasized the need for further integration of prevention, early intervention, and access to care. Aziz expressed a commitment to collaborating across the healthcare ecosystem to enhance understanding, reduce stigma, and support individuals earlier in their health journeys.

The report indicates that accelerated interventions could lead to a 15 percentage point reduction in obesity prevalence, unlocking up to $1.5 billion (Dh5.51 billion) in cumulative healthcare savings and contributing $51 billion (Dh187.3 billion) to the GDP by 2031. Additionally, GDP growth could increase by an extra 1.5 percentage points above baseline projections, potentially raising the UAE’s GDP to an estimated $790 billion (Dh2.9 trillion) by 2031. This underscores the critical role of population health in driving economic resilience and competitiveness.

Enhancing Demographic Sustainability

The report also forecasts that effective obesity interventions could result in approximately 75,000 additional births by 2031, including 24,000 Emirati births. Furthermore, it anticipates that over 17,000 more individuals could enter the workforce, with more than 9,000 being Emirati women. This reinforces the connection between public health, workforce participation, and long-term demographic sustainability.

Additionally, the report projects over 2,000 extra enrollments in bachelor’s degree programs and a 1.4% reduction in university dropout rates under the accelerated intervention scenario. This highlights the potential educational benefits associated with improved health outcomes.

Strategic Themes for Intervention

The report categorizes obesity intervention into key themes, including health, economy, society, and education. These themes are designed to support the development of sustainable health and economic strategies based on empirical data, enhancing the UAE’s preparedness for future challenges.
