Dubai: The Bold Idea That Inspired Entrepreneur Sharad Agarwal’s 34-Year Journey

Dubai has long been a magnet for ambitious individuals, and Sharad Agarwal’s journey exemplifies this phenomenon. Arriving in the city in 1989 with plans to stay for only two years, Agarwal quickly found himself captivated by Dubai’s dynamic environment. Over the decades, he has not only witnessed the city’s transformation but has also played a pivotal role in its technological evolution.

Agarwal recalls a defining moment in 1995 during a vacation in New York, where he attended a major Internet World Show. At that time, the internet had yet to reach the UAE, with its introduction occurring in 1996. Inspired by the 300 exhibitors discussing the future of the internet, Agarwal decided to leave his comfortable corporate job and return to Dubai as an entrepreneur. This decision positioned him at the forefront of the technological revolution that was about to unfold.

By establishing the region’s first internet services company, Agarwal contributed to the creation of a new category of business within the Dubai Economic Department. He emphasized the pioneering nature of his work, stating, “We’ve been pioneers in many ways.”

Dubai’s Resilience and Leadership

Agarwal’s entrepreneurial journey has not been without challenges. He has navigated significant hurdles, including the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing geopolitical tensions. Despite these obstacles, he remains steadfast in his belief in Dubai’s resilience.

“I am a big believer in the Dubai story, so I don’t get fazed,” Agarwal remarked. He views Dubai not merely as a city but as an idea, asserting that other global cities aspire to emulate its success. He attributes much of Dubai’s appeal to its leadership and execution capabilities.

Reflecting on the initiatives launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Agarwal noted the importance of implementing big ideas. He remarked that while many leaders dream big, few can execute effectively. Sheikh Mohammed sets ambitious deadlines that, despite seeming unrealistic, are consistently met.

Agarwal believes that this mindset has influenced his own entrepreneurial path. He stated, “Either you are a leader or a follower, so we take the risk – Dubai doesn’t just reward the risks you take, it rewards them exponentially.”

Expanding into Artificial Intelligence

Today, Agarwal’s business ventures have evolved beyond traditional internet services to encompass artificial intelligence. One of his recent projects involves AI systems that enable organizations to process extensive business documentation in mere minutes. Another initiative, RatedG.ai, focuses on AI-generated films from creators worldwide. Additionally, he launched the Blue Whale AI Academy, an educational platform aimed at raising awareness about beneficial AI tools.

“You have to keep learning; it’s not an option, it’s mandatory,” Agarwal emphasized, highlighting the necessity for continuous education in the rapidly changing tech landscape.

A Family’s Integration into Dubai Life

Agarwal’s journey in Dubai has been marked by both professional and personal growth. His two children have grown up in the UAE, and his wife runs her own business. The family has embraced the lifestyle that Dubai offers, making it challenging to consider relocating elsewhere.

“The infrastructure, lifestyle, F&B, events — you won’t get that anywhere in the world. It has been a wholesome existence for our family,” he stated. The appeal of Dubai is further enhanced by its status as a global hub, where Agarwal believes “everything comes here, we don’t have to go anywhere.”

The Ever-Evolving City

Even after nearly four decades in Dubai, Agarwal finds the city’s pace of change astonishing. He noted that even short absences reveal new developments, such as roads and restaurants. This continuous evolution contributes to Dubai’s ability to overcome challenges.

“Dubai always bounces back stronger. Because of the resolve, because of the resilience. And one thing that I have seen is that Dubai loves audacity. People who can think big, dream big and deliver on time. That is the definition of Dubai,” Agarwal concluded.
