YouTube Strengthens Child Safety with Supervised Kid Accounts Across MENA
YouTube has introduced supervised kid accounts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), including the United Arab Emirates. This initiative reflects a growing emphasis in the region on fostering safer digital environments for children and young users.
The new accounts are designed to provide age-appropriate experiences, enabling young users to explore their creativity and curiosity on YouTube while prioritizing safety, privacy, and well-being. Recognizing the unique needs of each family and child, these accounts empower parents with robust controls and a tailored, age-appropriate environment integrated into the main YouTube app.
Parents have the option to terminate these accounts at any time, should they prefer their children to have unrestricted access to all of YouTube’s content.
Regulatory Context
The launch of supervised kid accounts coincides with the UAE’s recent implementation of a comprehensive legal framework governing children’s access to social media. Under these new regulations, children under 15 are prohibited from creating or managing personal social media accounts. Teenagers aged 15 to 16 may use such platforms only under enhanced protections, which include stronger parental controls, safer content settings, and limitations on certain interactive features. Additionally, the regulations mandate that platforms establish reliable age-verification systems rather than relying solely on self-reported ages.
Content Settings and Parental Controls
Supervised kid accounts offer three distinct content settings for parents to select from, each aligned with international content ratings. The options include:
- Explore: Features educational content, tutorials, arts and crafts, and dance.
- Explore More: Expands to include gaming and live streams.
- Most of YouTube: Encompasses nearly all videos on the platform, excluding those rated 18+ or deemed inappropriate for supervised accounts.
In addition to these content settings, the accounts include user-friendly tools that assist parents in making informed choices for their families. Notably, the industry-first Shorts feed timer allows parents to set daily limits for scrolling through Shorts. Parents can disable short-form scrolling entirely by setting the timer to zero, which may be particularly useful during exam periods.
Built-in Safety Features
Supervised kid accounts come equipped with built-in controls that are automatically applied to all users under 18. These features include reminders to “Take a Break” and “Bedtime” notifications, promoting mindful viewing habits. Certain standard functionalities typically available on YouTube, such as content creation and commenting, are disabled for these accounts. Furthermore, personalized ad targeting is not permitted, and autoplay is not activated by default.
The newly announced kid accounts complement existing supervised teen accounts available in the region. These teen accounts provide a voluntary experience that allows young people to explore most of YouTube while fostering open communication with their parents. Features include easy account linking for parents and teens, timely email notifications regarding uploads or live streams, and shared insights into channel activity.

Javid Aslanov, Head of YouTube Middle East & North Africa, emphasized the platform’s integral role in family life over the past two decades. He noted that YouTube serves as a resource for homework help and shared viewing experiences, which is why the company is committed to investing in tools that prioritize family wellness. Research from Kantar indicates that 95% of viewers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE believe YouTube offers top-quality educational content, while 92% of Gen Z viewers assert that the platform has aided them in acquiring new skills.
Garth Graham, Head of Health at YouTube, stated the importance of protecting young people within the digital landscape. He highlighted that thoughtful safeguards, such as kid and teen accounts, enable young users to learn and explore safely while providing families with the necessary tools and boundaries.
Supervised kid and teen accounts are part of YouTube’s ongoing commitment to family safety, which has evolved over more than a decade with input from independent child development specialists. The platform also offers YouTube Kids, a separate app featuring a curated selection of age-appropriate videos. Google Family Link provides parental controls that allow parents to establish digital guidelines, manage app usage, filter content, and track the location of their child’s Android device. YouTube aims to continue prioritizing the safety, privacy, and well-being of young users on its platform.
