SANYA, CHINA – The 6th Asian Beach Games (ABG) is currently underway in Sanya, Hainan, China, from April 22 to 30, 2026. The Athletes’ Village, situated at the Mangrove Tree Resort World Sanya Bay, has transformed into a dynamic gathering space for athletes from across Asia, fostering connections and friendships.
A Culinary Celebration
The Athletes’ Village offers a rich tapestry of regional cuisines, featuring dishes such as Hainan rice noodles from China, curry prawns from India, and kimchi from South Korea. This diverse culinary experience not only satisfies appetites but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange, as athletes bond over shared meals and culinary traditions.

In addition to its culinary offerings, the Village hosts various activities that merge traditional Chinese culture with the unique charm of Hainan. Nearly 1,800 athletes from 45 countries and regions are participating, using these cultural experiences to forge genuine friendships off the field. The International Zone of the Athletes’ Village buzzes with activity, where athletes frequently gather to share training anecdotes, local delicacies, traditional songs, and folklore. Xing Liting, head of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Exhibition Area, described how athletes can engage with traditional crafts such as Li brocade, coconut carving, and Li pottery, allowing them to appreciate the unique aspects of Hainan culture. Additionally, the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic has attracted many athletes interested in therapies like Tuina (massage) and moxibustion.
Chmaissani Issa, a Saudi Arabian ju-jitsu athlete, expressed his enjoyment of immersing himself in Chinese culture, particularly after trying his hand at Hainan rattan and bamboo weaving.
Cultural Performances and Entertainment
Throughout the Games, the Athletes’ Village will feature eight themed cultural performances, including “Quintessence of China,” “Joyful Songs of the Sea,” and “Trendy Sounds of the Free Trade Port.” The inaugural performance, “Quintessence of China,” took place on April 19 and captivated athletes, prompting spontaneous applause. Issa remarked on the uniqueness of experiencing a Chinese performance in an Athletes’ Village.
An official from the Sanya ABG Organizing Committee highlighted the establishment of a professional service team dedicated to addressing athletes’ daily needs during the competition. This includes personalized care such as birthday wishes and congratulatory messages for medal winners, allowing athletes to focus on their events while promoting mutual understanding in a relaxed environment.
Significance of the 6th ABG
The 6th ABG is notable as the first major international sporting event following the launch of independent customs operations at the Hainan Free Trade Port. The cultural exchange activities at the Athletes’ Village not only facilitate communication among Asian youth but also showcase Hainan’s commitment to openness and inclusivity.
