UAE’s Transformative Leadership: Embracing Nurturing Qualities for a New Era

Qualities traditionally viewed as feminine—such as empathy, attentiveness, and support—are increasingly recognized as essential traits for effective leadership in the 21st century. This shift in perception is particularly evident in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where women’s roles in leadership are being redefined and celebrated.

A New Perspective on Leadership

In June, during a trip to Copenhagen, a conversation about leadership emerged among friends, including Willie, a South African entrepreneur, and his wife Imen, a Tunisian national. Willie highlighted a long-standing societal narrative that has pressured women to conform to a patriarchal model of leadership. He argued that this approach has led to the suppression of valuable qualities such as nurturing, wisdom, and care, which are now being recognized as sources of genuine power.

This perspective resonates with the evolving landscape of leadership in the UAE, where women are increasingly occupying influential roles across various sectors. The media industry exemplifies this change, with a notable chain of female leadership that has become a standard rather than an exception.

Historical Context and Institutional Support

The UAE has established a robust framework for women’s advancement. In 1975, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the Mother of the Nation, founded the General Women’s Union. This initiative integrated women’s education and participation into the national development agenda, emphasizing that both men and women are vital to the country’s progress.

In 2015, the UAE Gender Balance Council was formed under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Mona Al Marri, serving as Vice President, has been instrumental in translating the council’s commitment into actionable policies and practices. As a result, the UAE now ranks first in the Arab world and thirteenth globally on the UNDP Gender Inequality Index, surpassing many European nations that initiated gender discussions much earlier.

Measurable Achievements in Gender Equality

The impact of these initiatives is evident in measurable outcomes. A ruling in 2021 mandated that every listed public joint-stock company include at least one woman on its board, a requirement that has since been extended to private companies. Consequently, the number of women on the boards of listed companies has surged from 47 to 141. Women now hold two-thirds of public-sector jobs and occupy 30% of leadership positions. Additionally, they represent half of the seats in the Federal National Council, and equal pay is enshrined in federal law.

The UAE’s achievements extend beyond numbers. Women comprised 80% of the science team behind the Hope Probe, which successfully reached Mars. Furthermore, Shamma Al Mazrui became the youngest government minister in the world when she joined the Cabinet in 2016 at the age of 22.

Redefining Leadership Qualities

Willie emphasized that the qualities often dismissed as feminine—such as the ability to notice, listen, and support—are precisely what contemporary leadership requires. These traits are not exclusive to women, just as attributes like courage and decisiveness are not limited to men. The goal is not to replace one leadership model with another but to create an environment where both women and men can lead authentically.

This philosophy is exemplified in the workplace of Reem Al Marri, a prominent figure in the media sector. During a recent conflict, Al Marri worked long hours, demonstrating her commitment to her team. She ensured that her colleagues felt supported, even reaching out to check on those living alone during tense times. Her actions reflect a leadership style that prioritizes empathy and connection, illustrating that such qualities are integral to effective leadership.

Conclusion

The UAE’s approach to gender equality and leadership is reshaping the narrative around what it means to lead. As the country continues to champion women’s roles in various sectors, the emphasis on nurturing qualities is paving the way for a new era of leadership that values collaboration and understanding.
