Major Upgrade for Emirates Road: AED 750 Million Project Announced

The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has unveiled an ambitious AED 750 million ($204 million) project aimed at enhancing and upgrading Emirates Road. This significant initiative is set to unfold over a two-year period, marking a crucial step in the nation’s efforts to tackle traffic congestion and foster a smart, sustainable infrastructure.

Addressing Traffic Congestion

This upgrade is part of a broader national strategy designed to alleviate traffic issues while promoting economic growth and improving the overall quality of life for residents. The project will expand Emirates Road from three to five lanes in each direction along a 25-kilometer stretch, specifically from the Al Badee Interchange to the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain.

Increased Road Capacity

With this expansion, the road’s capacity is expected to rise dramatically, accommodating approximately 9,000 vehicles per hour—a substantial 65% increase. Additionally, Interchange No. 7 will undergo significant development, featuring six directional bridges that span 12.6 kilometers. This enhancement will allow for a capacity of up to 13,200 vehicles per hour. Furthermore, 3.4 kilometers of service roads will be constructed on both sides of the main roadway.

Benefits for Commuters

According to the Ministry, this upgrade will significantly reduce travel times for commuters traveling between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai by as much as 45%. This improvement is expected to ease congestion on one of the UAE’s busiest federal roads, enhancing traffic flow and minimizing emissions caused by traffic jams.

Supporting Economic Connectivity

The project is not just about improving daily commutes; it also aims to bolster trade and facilitate the movement of goods and services across the Emirates. By strengthening the country’s economic connectivity, the upgrade is poised to have a lasting impact on the UAE’s overall economic landscape.

Commitment to Sustainable Solutions

Youssef Abdullah, the Assistant Under-Secretary for the Federal Infrastructure Projects Sector at MoEI, emphasized that this initiative is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to provide practical and sustainable solutions to traffic congestion. He highlighted that the project represents a significant advancement toward creating an integrated national road network that aligns with the demands of both population and economic growth.

Abdullah also noted the UAE’s commitment to adopting innovative solutions aimed at improving transportation, reducing emissions, and enhancing community satisfaction.

Minimizing Disruption During Construction

To ensure minimal disruption during the construction phase, MoEI has devised phased strategies to manage traffic effectively. This includes establishing alternative detours and maintaining continuous coordination with local authorities. These measures are designed to provide commuters with a safe and smooth travel experience while ensuring the project is executed efficiently.

Keeping the Public Informed

In addition to traffic management strategies, MoEI is implementing a comprehensive communication plan to engage the public and keep road users informed about project progress and traffic guidance. The Ministry encourages all drivers to stay alert, adhere to traffic instructions, and regularly check its digital platforms for the latest updates.

This major upgrade to Emirates Road is a vital step toward enhancing the UAE’s infrastructure, ensuring that it meets the needs of its growing population while supporting economic development.
