UAE warns social media users of fines up to Dhs500,000 for online insults

Published:

The UAE has issued a stern warning to social media users regarding the legal repercussions of online insults, which can lead to fines of up to Dhs 500,000 and potential imprisonment. This announcement is part of the nationwide campaign titled “The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness,” aimed at promoting responsible digital behavior and raising awareness about cybercrime.

Launched by the UAE Ministry of Interior in collaboration with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC), the campaign emphasizes the importance of thoughtful communication online. It encourages users to consider the impact of their words before posting comments that could offend or ridicule others. The initiative coincides with Cybersecurity Awareness Month, observed annually in October, and aims to foster a safer digital environment across the UAE.

Legal Framework and Responsibilities

The campaign highlights the provisions of Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021, which addresses cybercrimes and the dissemination of false information. Under this law, individuals who insult others or make defamatory statements that could lead to public contempt may face fines ranging from Dhs 250,000 to Dhs 500,000, along with possible imprisonment. The law also stipulates harsher penalties if the offense is directed at public officials or individuals performing public duties.

Authorities stress that online comments carry legal weight, urging users to remain aware of the potential consequences of their digital interactions. The campaign serves as a reminder that social media should be a platform for constructive dialogue rather than personal attacks or offensive remarks.

Encouraging Positive Digital Engagement

In addition to outlining legal consequences, the campaign promotes the idea of using social media for positive expression and respectful exchanges of opinions. It calls on the public to engage in constructive discussions that reflect the UAE’s social values, thereby contributing to a more welcoming digital community.

“The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness” aims to educate citizens about the risks associated with cybercrime, including online fraud and the exploitation of technological advancements. The initiative also addresses the evolving nature of cyber threats, particularly those involving artificial intelligence technologies. Through various awareness activities, the campaign seeks to enhance digital literacy and encourage responsible online behavior, helping individuals protect themselves and others from potential cyber threats.

As the UAE continues to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape, this campaign underscores the importance of digital responsibility and the need for a collective effort to maintain a safe online environment.
