UAE Residents Enjoy Top-Tier Sleep Quality
High Sleep Efficiency
A recent report reveals that residents of the UAE are among the world’s highest achievers in sleep quality. According to findings from the smart ring brand Ōura, the average sleep efficiency in the UAE is an impressive 85.7%. This figure indicates the proportion of time spent asleep while in bed, showcasing that, despite an average sleep duration of just 6.85 hours a night, UAE residents are maximizing the quality of their rest.
Unique Sleep Patterns
The report underscores unique characteristics of sleep patterns within the UAE. The country displays one of the most varied sleep and wake times globally, with residents typically going to bed around 12:06 a.m. and waking at approximately 7:57 a.m. This trend reflects a cultural embrace of “night owls,” as the UAE has the highest percentage of late chronotypes at 6.67%, significantly surpassing the global average of 3%. Rather than indicating poor sleep habits, these patterns are generally aligned with individuals’ natural biological rhythms, suggesting a harmonious relationship between societal lifestyle and personal health.
Sleep Quality That Stands Out
While the average sleep duration in the UAE is slightly below the global norm of 7.1 hours, its quality remains unmatched. Countries such as Finland, the USA, and the UK may record longer sleep times, yet they often fall short in delivering high-quality rest. Notably, even when compared with Japan, which is recognized for shorter sleep durations, the UAE’s sleep quality indicators—such as REM sleep, deep sleep stages, and total sleep quality—are superior. This highlights a distinctive sleep profile within the nation.
Gender Differences in Sleep Patterns
The report also reveals notable gender disparities in sleep behaviors among UAE residents. On average, women in the region sleep for 7.07 hours nightly, exceeding the 6.59 hours recorded for men. Women also present higher sleep efficiency and more consistent REM sleep patterns. These findings align with global research showcasing that women often exhibit more effective recovery and restorative sleep behaviors. This growing awareness about the importance of sleep and health among women in the UAE is particularly encouraging.
Insights from Experts
Doug Sweeney, Chief Marketing Officer at Ōura, offered insights into the study’s implications. He noted, “Sleep quality is one of the most important long-term health indicators, and the UAE stands out as a compelling model for maintaining this quality despite life challenges that may affect sleep duration. In a society where nights are long and productivity is a deeply rooted cultural value, we see individuals aligning with their natural biological rhythms rather than resisting them. By understanding and respecting individual chronotypes—whether someone is more active in the morning, late in the day, or in between—UAE residents are able to balance rest and activity to achieve deeper, more restorative sleep.”
As Ōura continues to grow in the UAE, the focus remains on providing data-driven insights that help individuals gain a better understanding of their sleep needs and how to make impactful adjustments for improved wellness.
Technological Advancements in Sleep
It’s also noteworthy that Ōura has recently released its fourth generation of smart rings, including the Oura Ring 4 and the Oura Ring Ceramic, to further support users in tracking their sleep quality. This technological advancement offers residents the tools needed to monitor their health more effectively, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing personal well-being through innovation.
Enjoying quality sleep is essential for overall health, and UAE residents are leveraging their unique lifestyle and biological rhythms to excel in this vital aspect of life.
