UAE Prepares for Cold Spell: Rain, Strong Winds, and Rough Seas Expected

Date:

Residents in the UAE are bracing for a notable shift in weather, as meteorologists alert to an impending cold spell that is set to impact the region significantly this week.

The Coming Cold Wave

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has indicated that starting from Wednesday, March 4, through Thursday, March 5, 2026, the Emirates will experience a substantial drop in temperatures. The cold front is expected to persist into the weekend, extending the chilly conditions beyond the initial forecast period.

Factors Behind the Cold Spell

This sudden drop in temperature results from a confluence of atmospheric phenomena. A surface low-pressure system, combined with an upper-level trough, is enabling a cold air mass to sweep into the area. According to meteorologist Muhammed Sajjad KP, dubbed the “UAE Weatherman,” Global Forecast System models predict a significant cold surge moving throughout the Arabian Peninsula, which is expected to bring unusually low temperatures to the UAE.

Additionally, strong northwesterly winds will prevail throughout the week and into the following days, further intensifying the cold intrusion and maintaining daytime temperatures well below the average for this time of year.

Forecast for Rainfall

Cloud cover is anticipated to thicken across the country, with rainfall expected in various areas between Wednesday and Thursday. While many locations will likely see light to moderate showers, the northern and eastern parts of the UAE may experience heavier rain at times. The most intense rainfall is projected to occur overnight and in the early morning hours, keeping some areas wet even into Saturday.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution during morning drives, as roads may be slippery and visibility could be compromised due to the rain.

Temperature Expectations

This cold spell is among the most pronounced of the season. As warmer southeasterly winds give way to the cooler northwesterly breezes, residents can expect a significant drop in temperatures. The coldest conditions are likely during late-night and early-morning hours on Thursday and Friday, contrasting sharply with the warmer weather experienced in recent days.

There is also the possibility of an additional cold front following this one, indicating a broader pattern of atmospheric changes affecting the region.

Wind Conditions and Visibility

Wind patterns are slated for a shift from southeasterly to northwesterly, which will range from moderate to brisk. These winds may carry dust and sand, particularly over open desert areas, leading to reduced visibility on highways and roads. Drivers should remain vigilant and adjust their speeds accordingly to ensure safe travel conditions.

The northwesterly winds are a strong indicator that the colder air mass is settling in, emphasizing the anticipated drop in temperature.

Marine Conditions in the Gulf and Oman Sea

Expectations for marine conditions are less favorable as well. As of Tuesday night, the Arabian Gulf is predicted to experience rough seas, with choppy conditions expected to continue through Thursday. Meanwhile, the Oman Sea may see slightly lesser waves, but there could still be instances of rough waters. Fishermen, boaters, and beach visitors should stay informed through official marine updates and refrain from entering the water during hazardous conditions.

Weekend Weather Outlook

While the primary impact of the current weather system is anticipated between March 4 and 5, unsettled conditions may linger into the weekend. Cold temperatures, along with scattered showers and consistent northwesterly winds, will likely characterize the upcoming days.

For those planning outdoor activities, it’s crucial to stay updated with the latest forecasts, dress appropriately for the cooler weather, and exercise caution while driving, especially during periods of rain and reduced visibility.

As the cold air settles over the Emirates, officials are reminding the public to stay informed and take the necessary precautions to navigate the changing weather safely.
