UAE Condemns 26 Days of Egregious Iranian Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has condemned a series of Iranian attacks that have persisted for 26 days, involving over 2,000 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting critical civilian infrastructure. These attacks have included strikes on airports, residential areas, and other civilian sites, which the UAE describes as a “blatant violation of the state’s sovereignty and international humanitarian law.”
Remarks at the Human Rights Council
During a session of the Human Rights Council, Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and Other International Organisations in Geneva, characterized the situation as more than just a military escalation. He stated that it represents a “systematic, reckless behaviour” that threatens both regional and international security. Al Musharakh emphasized that these attacks specifically target infrastructure essential for civilian safety, energy security, and the global economy.
He noted that Iran’s actions are directed not at countries with which it is at war, but rather at its neighbors—nations that have made concerted efforts to avoid escalation. Al Musharakh highlighted that military solutions only exacerbate crises and lead to severe consequences for the region.
Isolation of Iran
Al Musharakh pointed out that Iran now finds itself isolated from both its neighbors and the international community. He accused Iran of blatantly defying the United Nations Charter and attempting to destabilize the international order through reckless actions aimed at imposing hegemony. He remarked that Iran attempts to justify its attacks by labeling them as “retaliatory strikes,” a characterization the UAE firmly rejects.
The UAE has made it clear that it will not permit its territory to be used for any military operations against Iran. Al Musharakh criticized Iran’s contradictory narratives about good neighborliness, contrasting them with its actions that target civilians and critical infrastructure, including airports, ports, and residential buildings. He reported that the UAE has lost three members of its armed forces, while six civilians have been killed and 166 others injured from 29 different nationalities due to these attacks.
Regional and Global Repercussions
The repercussions of these attacks extend beyond the UAE, threatening navigation in key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. Al Musharakh warned that these actions undermine the stability of energy markets and global supply chains, exacerbating economic and social pressures that affect the rights to security and development worldwide.
He referenced the adoption of United Nations Security Council resolution 2817, which condemns the Iranian attacks against the UAE and other Gulf Cooperation Council states, as well as Jordan. This resolution was cosponsored by 136 UN member states, sending a unified message that the international community will not tolerate attacks on state sovereignty or the targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure.
Additionally, the International Maritime Organisation has adopted a resolution condemning Iranian threats and attacks against ships, marking a significant response to Iran’s actions in the region.
Call for Human Rights Accountability
Al Musharakh called upon the Human Rights Council to take decisive action in condemning human rights violations resulting from Iran’s unlawful attacks against countries that are pillars of peace in the region. He reiterated that the UAE has been built on principles of good neighborliness, tolerance, and coexistence, guided by a leadership that values dignified living and rejects hatred.
He emphasized that the UAE’s model is grounded in robust economic strategies and international partnerships, which have positioned its economy as one of the world’s leading and most adaptable. Al Musharakh reaffirmed the UAE’s right to take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and national security in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, ensuring the safety of its citizens and residents from diverse nationalities.
He concluded by stating that the Iranian attacks have underscored the strength of UAE institutions, the resilience of its national system, and the unity of its society.
