During a recent working visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Christian Stocker, the Federal Chancellor of Austria, engaged in discussions with UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The meeting focused on current international developments and regional security concerns, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the two nations.
Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation
The discussions included exploring avenues to bolster political, economic, humanitarian, and cultural cooperation. Both leaders acknowledged that the relationship between the UAE and Austria has significantly progressed in recent years, founded on mutual trust, respect, and shared interests. This partnership aims to ensure ongoing development and prosperity for both nations.
The leaders emphasized their commitment to enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, originally signed in 2021. This agreement will be adapted to include emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). Both countries reaffirmed their dedication to establishing a digital bridge to facilitate exchanges in AI and other critical technologies, fostering industries based on equality and mutual benefit.
Economic and Investment Initiatives
The two sides discussed strategies for expanding mutual investment and deepening economic cooperation. They recognized their roles as regional hubs and gateways to affluent markets with substantial growth potential. The leaders noted the necessity of creating favorable conditions to enhance the attractiveness of their business environments, which would support sustainable development and shared prosperity.
Regular high-level meetings with representatives from the business communities of both countries will be held to strengthen ties among small, medium, and large enterprises. The upcoming Joint Economic Committee, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Agreement on Economic, Industrial, and Technical Cooperation, was also welcomed.
Energy Sector Collaboration
The leaders highlighted the strong collaboration in the energy sector, particularly in renewable energy. They expressed intentions to continue fostering cooperation through the Strategic Energy Security and Industrial Cooperation Partnership, including initiatives like the Hydrogen Alliance established in March 2022. Private sector partnerships, involving companies such as ADNOC, Mubadala, OMV, and Borealis, were identified as crucial for advancing collaboration across the energy value chain.
Cultural and Humanitarian Engagement
Cultural cooperation was another focal point of the discussions, particularly in classical music and museums. Both leaders expressed their desire to explore new avenues for strengthening bilateral relations through cultural partnerships. They emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges to promote mutual understanding and advance initiatives that align with the UAE’s cultural agenda and Austria’s rich heritage in the arts.
The leaders also recognized the significance of water as a vital resource for sustainable development and climate resilience. They underscored the need for international cooperation, particularly in light of the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal.
Addressing Regional Security Challenges
In the realm of security, the leaders condemned Iran’s attacks on the UAE, GCC States, Jordan, and other regional nations, citing violations of sovereignty and international law. They affirmed the right to self-defense in response to these unlawful actions, as recognized by Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

They expressed concern over the lack of progress in resolving this issue and reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful settlement through negotiations or referral to the International Court of Justice.
Additionally, they expressed a shared commitment to achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region, particularly in relation to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. They called for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, emphasizing the importance of international law and relevant UN resolutions.
