Air India Cuts Widebody Operations by 15%

Amid ongoing challenges, Air India has announced a reduction of 15% in its international widebody services. This decision comes in response to a recent tragic incident alongside escalating geopolitical tensions. The cuts primarily affect flights operated by Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft and are set to continue until at least mid-July.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Air India outlined several contributing factors behind this operational adjustment:

• Instability in the Middle East: Heightened tensions in the region have made some routes riskier, prompting airlines to reassess their operations.
• Night Curfews: Restrictions in European and East Asian airspace have further complicated flight schedules.
• Ongoing Safety Checks: Enhanced scrutiny on its Dreamliner fleet has necessitated considerable adjustments.

The airline also confirmed it would perform one-time precautionary inspections on its Boeing 777 aircraft, reinforcing its commitment to safety amidst these turbulent times.

Safety Checks Strain Air India Operations

Following last week’s unfortunate Dreamliner crash, Air India has experienced substantial operational disruptions. India’s aviation regulator has mandated rigorous safety inspections for the Boeing 787 fleet, which has led to a cascade of delays and cancellations, leaving passengers deeply concerned about their travel plans.

Adding to the turmoil are airspace restrictions impacting both domestic and international travel, mainly exacerbated by the climatic and geopolitical climate of the Middle East. As reported by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a staggering 83 widebody flights have been canceled since the incident, with 66 of those being Dreamliner flights.

To date, inspections have cleared 26 of the total 33 Boeing 787s, while one-time checks for the Boeing 777s are also in progress as a safety precaution.

No Major Safety Issues Found

On a reassuring note, preliminary findings from the DGCA inspections indicate that no major safety issues were uncovered. The agency has confirmed that Air India’s maintenance systems remain compliant with regulatory standards, alleviating some concerns for passengers.
