Tragic Incident in Istanbul: Family Dies After Eating Street Food
A Heartbreaking Loss in Turkey
In a distressing turn of events, a family vacationing in Istanbul experienced a heartbreaking tragedy that led to the deaths of four relatives. The victims, identified as Servet (38), his wife Cigdem Boceck (27), and their two young children, Kadir (6) and Masal (3), had traveled from Germany and were enjoying their time in Turkey when disaster struck.
Family’s Holiday Journey
The Boceck family arrived in Istanbul on November 9 for what was supposed to be a wonderful getaway. They spent two days exploring the city and sampled local cuisine. Their culinary adventure began in Ortakoy, where they tried a popular street food delicacy known as midye—mussels stuffed with rice and served cold, usually accompanied by lemon. Later, they visited a restaurant and enjoyed traditional dishes, including kokorec, made from calf intestines, and tavuk tantuni, a type of chicken wrap. They concluded their meal with a treat of Turkish delights from a nearby shop in Fatih.
Sudden Onset of Symptoms
After returning to their hotel, tragedy struck. The children quickly began exhibiting alarming symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting. These health issues soon affected their parents as well. In a desperate bid for help, the family sought out a taxi, with a driver recalling a frantic scene—Kadirga Port Park was the setting where the parents implored him to drive them to the hospital. The driver described how the little girl was continuously vomiting, while her mother appeared to be unconscious throughout the ride.
An Unfortunate Outcome
Upon arrival at the hospital, the situation worsened dramatically. Sadly, both Kadir and Masal, as well as Cigdem Boceck, died shortly after. Servet, the father, was initially stabilized and transferred to Cemil Taskcioglu Hospital. Despite receiving care in the ICU for six days, he ultimately succumbed to his ailments, confirming the devastating nature of this incident. The Istanbul Health Directorate’s spokesperson Abdullah Emre Guner later announced the news of Servet’s passing.
Investigation Underway: 11 Detained
In the wake of this tragic event, authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation. As a result, 11 people have been detained, including the street vendor who sold the midye, other food vendors, staff from the hotel, and personnel from a pest control company involved in fumigation.
Possible Causes: Food Poisoning or Pesticide Exposure?
Initially, investigators focused on food poisoning as the probable cause of the family’s demise. However, they are also examining the possibility that pesticide exposure may have caused health complications. Questions have arisen regarding the treatment methods involving bedbugs in the hotel where the family stayed. Police are investigating if harmful chemicals used during these treatments could have infiltrated the family’s room through ventilation systems.
The Chemical in Question
Reports indicate that the hotel utilized aluminium phosphide, a highly toxic pesticide common in agricultural practices. This substance poses serious health risks if inhaled and could explain the tragic outcomes experienced by the Boceck family.
Ongoing Testing and Investigation
As the investigation continues, authorities have collected environmental samples from different locations related to the incident. The hotel in question has been evacuated and sealed for safety precautions. The focus remains on determining whether food consumption or pesticide exposure—or perhaps both—contributed to the family’s untimely deaths.
Authorities Seek Clarity
As the situation unfolds, investigators have not ruled out any angles. The food consumed by the family, including the street food and restaurant dishes, as well as the potential for pesticide exposure, all remain under scrutiny. Samples related to both factors have been sent for testing, and examinations at the Forensic Medicine Institute aim to uncover the precise cause of death for each family member, shedding light on this tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Istanbul and beyond.
