The UAE: India’s Top Travel Destination in 2024

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has set itself firmly as the preferred international destination for Indian travelers in 2024. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism’s India Tourism Data Compendium 2025, the UAE accounted for a staggering 7.8 million Indian visitors, making up 25.2% of all Indian overseas travel. Following closely behind were Saudi Arabia, the United States, Thailand, and Singapore, among others, which collectively formed a significant portion of outbound travel from India.

Leading Outbound Destinations for Indian Travelers

The report outlines that the ten most popular destinations — UAE, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Thailand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Qatar, Canada, Kuwait, and Oman — accounted for around 71.1% of all overseas departures from India in 2024. This underscores the strong preference of Indian travelers toward these countries, highlighting not only cultural and economic ties but also the ease of travel and familiarity.

Types of Travel Motivations

When delving into the reasons behind this outbound travel, leisure vacations emerged as the leading category, comprising 42.5% of the total trips. Following this were visits linked to the Indian diaspora, which made up 34.6%. The business and professional travel segment accounted for 14.9%, while pilgrimage represented 3.9%, education made up 2.4%, and other miscellaneous reasons constituted 1.4%. The dominance of leisure travel indicates a shift in the preferences of Indian travelers toward exploration and relaxation.

Growth of Outbound Tourism

The surge in Indian outbound travel has been nothing short of remarkable. From merely 1.9 million travelers in 1991, the figure soared to 30.8 million by 2024. This growth reflects a compound annual growth rate of 8.7%. Although the Covid-19 pandemic led to a massive 73% drop in international departures in 2020, the sector rebounded rapidly, with a remarkable 152.6% increase in 2022 compared to 2021. By 2023, travel numbers surpassed pre-pandemic levels, reaching 27.8 million trips, and continued to rise by 10.7% in 2024.

Factors Fueling Outbound Travel

Several key factors are driving this upward trend in outbound tourism. Higher disposable incomes, enhanced air connectivity, and increasing global exposure all play significant roles in enhancing Indian travelers’ wanderlust. The defining demographic for these outbound journeys primarily involves the working-age population, particularly those between 25 and 34 years, who represented 27.4% of travelers. Additionally, individuals aged 35 to 44 accounted for 24.5%, indicating that travel interests are not limited to just young adults.

Gender Dynamics in Travel Trends

An interesting facet of the data is the gender dynamics in outbound travel. Men represented a dominant 65.8% of travelers, while women made up 34.1%. This disparity may highlight evolving social dynamics within Indian society, although it also opens avenues for discussion regarding women’s travel trends in the context of safety, independence, and cultural expectations.

UAE’s Growing Allure

The appeal of the UAE remains strong, as evidenced by its growth in visitors from India — a significant increase from 7.2 million visitors in 2023 and 6.3 million in 2019. The combination of luxurious amenities, cultural experiences, and economic ties make it an inviting destination. Saudi Arabia also showed growth, with 3.4 million visitors, increasing from 3 million in 2023.

Other Noteworthy Destinations

The United States recorded 2.1 million departures from India in 2024, though its market share slightly dipped from 7.3% to 6.9%. Thailand, meanwhile, saw a resurgence, with 1.9 million Indian travelers, up from 1.4 million in the previous year. These shifts highlight the evolving preferences of Indian travelers as they explore a variety of global destinations, affirming the robust interest in international travel.

Through the lens of these statistics, the landscape of travel from India appears vibrant and dynamic, marked by an unyielding enthusiasm for exploring the world.
