Spring Shanghai: Putuo Day Pop-up Event Showcases Unique Charm of Putuo District in Milan

MILAN, ITALY – On April 25, 2026, the “Putuo Day” themed event took place at a newsstand in Largo Augusto, Milan, as part of the “Shanghai in My Mind · Spring Shanghai” pop-up event series. This initiative highlighted the cultural and artistic connections between Shanghai’s Putuo District and Milan, creating a vibrant dialogue that spanned continents.

A Fusion of Cultures: The Garden of Light

The event, themed “Half Marathon Suzhou Creek · Garden of Light,” transformed the compact venue into four distinct spaces: the Light of Development, the Light of Vitality, the Light of Warmth, and the Light of Craftsmanship. Each area showcased a unique aspect of urban aesthetics, blending Putuo’s cultural heritage with Milan’s artistic flair.

The Garden Walk zone, embodying the “Light of Vitality,” featured artificial greenery that mirrored the lively energy of the Suzhou Creek waterfront. Cultural products from the “Half Marathon Suzhou Creek” collection, including sand-art magnets and custom scarves, contributed to the vibrant atmosphere. The Interactive Experience zone, representing the “Light of Warmth,” facilitated cross-cultural exchanges through activities such as stamp collecting and film screenings. The Craftsmanship Heritage zone highlighted the “Light of Craftsmanship” with displays of century-old Hero pens and bamboo weaving, emphasizing the brilliance of Eastern craftsmanship. Lastly, the Light and Shadow Window zone illustrated the “Light of Development,” where warm light filtered through golden bookmarks, casting colorful reflections reminiscent of Milan Cathedral’s stained-glass windows.

Visitors engaged actively, taking photos with light-and-shadow bookmarks, writing messages on postcards, and capturing memories with instant cameras. They collected commemorative stamps and experienced the elegance of Eastern writing through Hero pens. The VR film “HI, This Is Half Marathon Suzhou Creek” provided an immersive introduction to Putuo, bridging language and cultural barriers.

Continuing the Dialogue: A Lasting Connection

The “Spring Shanghai” themed pop-up served not only as a showcase for Milan but also as a cultural dialogue between Europe and Asia. To extend the celebration of light, Putuo has established a “Garden of Light” themed corner at the Half Marathon Suzhou Creek Café & Cultural Creative Store. This initiative aims to foster ongoing cultural exchanges between the two cities.

Inside the café, décor featuring white magnolias and azaleas symbolizes the friendship between Milan and Shanghai. Decorative decals inspired by Milan Cathedral’s stained-glass windows create colorful patterns on the floor, enhancing the aesthetic connection. Messages collected during the Milan event, along with handwritten postcards and instant photos, will be displayed in artistic installations, including a corridor of greetings and a light-and-shadow photo wall that reflects a blend of Chinese and Italian cultures. Limited-edition bookmarks and themed merchandise will also be available, while responses from Shanghai residents will be compiled into a collection, reinforcing mutual goodwill.

Urban Development: Putuo’s Growth Strategy

Putuo District is actively engaged in China’s Yangtze River Delta integration strategy, supporting the development of the Shanghai–Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt. This initiative promotes a coordinated innovation zone and a high-quality area surrounding the Half Marathon Suzhou Creek. A digital-driven upgrade of the bulk commodity trade supply chain is currently underway, transforming ecological landscapes along the Suzhou Creek waterfront into spaces for industrial development.

The Zhenru sub-center is accelerating its digital transformation, merging heritage with modern urban functions. Taopu Smart City is emerging as a hub for research and development, positioning itself as a model for integrated urban-industrial development. These initiatives collectively contribute to Putuo’s high-quality growth.

Enhancing Quality of Life: A Vibrant Community

Industrial growth is fostering urban vitality, enhancing the quality of life for residents. Putuo aims to create a livable and business-friendly district characterized by energy and warmth. It serves as a hub for sports and a desirable living environment. Major events such as the Suzhou Creek Half Marathon and dragon boat races showcase the district’s dynamism. Daily life is enriched by spaces like TOP Central Park and M50 Creative Park, which remain centers for arts and culture.

Putuo is also focused on building a “15-minute community living circle,” ensuring residents have convenient access to education, healthcare, and retail services. Efforts are underway to advance child-friendly urban development and expand services for seniors, creating supportive environments for the city’s builders and frontline workers. Through these initiatives, openness and inclusiveness have become defining characteristics of the district.
