Somerset Booker Prize nominee Kennard credits former teachers for inspiring his writing

Published:

Somerset Booker Prize nominee Kennard has attributed his writing inspiration to the encouragement he received from his former teachers at Holyrood Academy. In an interview, he reflected on how growing up in a quiet town shaped his creative impulses, allowing him the space to explore his interests in writing and music.

Kennard, who attended Holyrood Academy from 1992 to 1999, noted that his experiences there were pivotal in developing his literary skills. He specifically highlighted the role of his English teachers, stating that their support was foundational to his growth as a writer. According to Kennard, it was the encouragement from his teachers that truly motivated him to pursue writing seriously.

He recalled how Paul Coffman, the former head of English at the academy, would read Kennard’s short stories during break times and provide him with constructive feedback. This mentorship, he said, was crucial in helping him take his writing seriously and develop his unique voice.

Kennard’s reflections on his educational journey underscore the significant impact that dedicated teachers can have on their students’ lives. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing creativity in young people, particularly in environments that may initially seem limiting.

As he continues to gain recognition for his literary work, Kennard remains grateful for the foundational experiences that shaped his path. His journey from a quiet town to becoming a nominee for the prestigious Somerset Booker Prize illustrates the transformative power of education and mentorship in the arts.
