Eleven Emirati artificial intelligence experts from the National Experts Programme’s Artificial Intelligence track (NEP-AI) are currently engaging with leading Canadian institutions to explore the translation of advanced AI research into responsible applications. This international study visit, which commenced on Monday and will continue until October 2, includes sessions at prominent establishments such as Mila, McGill University, Scale AI, and Université de Sherbrooke, as reported by Economy Middle East.
Building a National AI Ecosystem
The NEP-AI initiative aims to connect participants with top experts and innovators in major global AI hubs, enhancing their understanding of international AI applications and governance. The delegation comprises specialists from various AI-related fields, including computing, generative AI, cybersecurity, and responsible startup scaling.
During their visit, the experts will engage with Mila, a renowned AI research institute in Montreal, to learn about its evolution into one of the largest academic AI research centres globally. The program will cover essential aspects of establishing a national AI ecosystem, such as funding, talent development, and government partnerships.
Focus on Large Language Models and Governance
Throughout the week, sessions will also delve into the deployment of large language models within government and public institutions. Notable speakers include Professor Yoshua Bengio, a prominent figure in AI research, who will discuss safe-by-design AI, and Hugo Larochelle, who will address the challenges of transitioning advanced research into practical applications.
Valérie Pisano, President and CEO of Mila, emphasised the importance of international collaboration in advancing AI research and ensuring its benefits reach various institutions and communities.
Responsible AI Engineering and Crisis Management
At McGill University, participants will focus on responsible AI engineering and governance, examining how AI impacts information environments and regulatory approaches. A live simulation will challenge them to respond to a generative AI incident affecting global shipping and trade.
The visit will also highlight the journey from research to market, with sessions involving Canadian startups and Scale AI discussing investment and technology partnerships.
Exploring Quantum Computing and Neuromorphic Systems
The program will conclude at the Université de Sherbrooke, where participants will visit the Institut Quantique and the Interdisciplinary Institute for Technological Innovation. They will explore advancements in quantum computing and neuromorphic systems, focusing on developing energy-efficient hardware for future AI applications.
This international study visit is part of NEP-AI’s eight-month learning journey, which unites 32 Emirati experts from government, technology, and academia to support the UAE’s national AI priorities.
